I'm more of a self defense shooter than hunter but I thought it was pretty cool my grandson got a deer this past Saturday here in Northern Ohio. He's 12 an it was his first time out.

Good luck to the other hunters in here.

Ok, so my old lady shoots at the range with me since her brain surgeries, but carrying on her and being able to access and shoot an asailant is not something that's gonna happen. And my oldest is only 17.

Been thinking about a couple of the Byrna SDs for them for Christmas. There might be some legal issues with the minor, but I could research that.

Thoughts on these for members of the fairer sex who cannot carry due to legal or physical reasons?

I took my twins shooting once when they were around 12-14. Taught them all the safety an showed them proper handling. They were glad to learn the basics but didn't really enjoy shooting. My oldest son likes shooting an we go together when he can get away from his 4 kids.

I don't know about minors an firearms I assume state laws vary. My grandson has his hunting rifle an it's locked in his dads safe when he's not shooting in a supervised situation. Once he turns 18 I assume my grandson can take full custody of it without legal concerns.

For your wife I've seen tasers that look like cell phones you can hold in your hand an not look threatening. Maybe something like that.

My daughters, 17 and 12, are both well versed with firearms. My oldest has her own 10/22 rifle and is quite a good pistol shot as well. Better than me if I were to be honest.

My daughter works evenings and often times leaves alone. She'd like something a little more confidence inspiring than the pepper spray she uses currently.

The Byrna is not a "firearm." It's basically an air pistol that shoots pepperballs or other larger .60 caliberish projectiles.

Although legality for the minor might still be questionable.

Tasers are an option I've considered. But if I'm not mistaken the ones that launch outwards are LEO only. I like the idea of them being able to defend themselves at range.

I don't think looking threatening is a concern for them. A "camouflage" device is not a necessity. But it might be cool.

I guess it's better than nothing and I'd only have her carry it at night when she's alone. Doug my only fear would be if she had to draw it and some trigger happy cop or civilian was nearby they'd think it was a real gun and shoot her. I always carry pepper spray as a back up and would try and use that first depending on the situation. Like some tweeter reaching into my truck or something like that.

That's something I hadn't thought of.

I would think that if the situation warranted it being pulled it would be obvious to all around. But maybe not?

I'll be doing more research.

the tasers are better than nothing but i am not a fan of them. a bad guy has to be reasonably close for them to work which is less than ideal. a good spray may have an advantage in some cases. shame we have to think on these things.

The bright colors used to be a sign of a non lethal/replica firearm. Then the CC craze brought about the colors for ladies models. Maybe they should put a orange ring around the barrel the show it's not a true firearm like the airsoft ones have.

as a side note about tasers. at one point- idk about now, but mp and shore patrols etc. were not allowed to carry tasers as they were considered more deadly than getting shot. so back in that day most mp types had a model 92 or 226 and way back a 1911. im for damn sure i do not want to get shot with any of those. I did get a zap of the taser once. it did not knock me out or on my butt. more like a very harsh wake up slap and having the wind knocked out for a split second. my point in sharing - i would not trust a taser to stop a violent attacker. esp one on drugs or otherwise very motivated to do harm to someone. a good spray however would make me cry on the ground like a lil girl lol.

I was thinking their orange or yellow should be pretty obvious that it's not a gun. But you bring up a good point on the new Gucci stuff.
