I've been filing from the same address, depositing into the same bank account , using the same TurboTax account, and obviously with the same personal information for the past 14 years. At the end of January I got his hit with the "we need to verify who you really are" notification.

While I still get back less than I paid in, you've had your interest free loan all year, gimmie my money so your humble slave can go buy a few steak dinners damn you. Thankfully I could verify who I am through my ID.me account, but the whole ordeal has delayed my pennies being returned to me for no apparent or logic reason other than...well no, there is literally no stretch of the imagination as to why I was flagged.

That is it, that is my rant. FU IRS.

You may want to do some investigation to make sure you haven’t been the victim of a fraud, i.e. that someone hasn’t already tried to file a return using your ss# and personal information. Unfortunately, it’s a common scam.

All joking aside, this is indeed a real thing.

Our daughter passed away in 2010 at 21 yrs old, and when we went to file our taxes for that year we found someone had already claimed her as a dependent and taken some of her personal info. It took us months of dealing with the IRS and the state of AZ to get it all squared away. And NOBODY could, or would tell us exactly what happened.

Damn them.

Your granddaughter must be a real go-getter if she is already filing a tax return at 9. ?
Actually, when my daughter and son-in-law file their taxes and claim my Granddaughter and Grandson as dependents using the kids' SSN, the IRS rejects the return because my Granddaughter's SSN is shown as being used by someone else. Trying clear this up has be nearly a 1 and half year effort.

It ain't new folks. My oldest brother, born in 1953, started filing taxes in the early 1970'ss and then all of a sudden one year he gets a letter to verify who he is. Turns out some how he was given the same SS number as someone 200 miles a way - and their names were in no way close.

Never hear much anymore about going to VAT and eliminating so much bureaucracy and hundreds of thousands of jobs and all those tax dodges available to the upper class. I'm not a fan of the SS administration , without authorization they took $1500 from me for Medicare coverage that I had declined and was impossible to get reimbursed.

They are doing you a favor, especially if you haven't made any changes to your info in 14 years.
Some people will go that long without even a password change. Better you than someone in Asia getting the refund, even if it takes a few days longer.

FYI, I had the same thing happen when logging into SSA, so maybe it's a system change on the gub'ment side. Too bad they aren't as vigilant when it comes to voting.

This year I am actually considering adjusting my paycheck deductions so I start paying tax every year. I live a simple life so I will never need to file anything other than a standard deduction return until well into my retirement years if I make it that far. haha

My wife and I try to keep our withholdings aimed to a point where we either receive little back, or pay little at filing time.

That way we get to keep use of most of OUR money during the year, and the government doesn't get to use it for free.

Last year was bad for us on many financial/job fronts, and so we got a few hundred back in Fed and State each. We can live with that.
