I noticed a few days ago that on my Lariat with 501 and tech package will show what gear I’m in on the right hand display. To trigger this gear display just toggle the +/- on the gear shift lever. When you do this, this display will show up (see pict above) to the left of the compass. (BTW, my Wife took the pict while I was driving).

Yes, and then if you toggle the - it will drop the gear list numbers to the max gear you set max on the transmission.

Progressive Range Selection
Progressive Range Selection gives you the
ability to lockout gears from the automatic
shifting range. This may provide you with
an improved driving experience for
example, in slippery conditions or when
experiencing a steep slope.
With the transmission in drive (D), press
the – button to active PRS. The available
and selected gears appear on the
instrument cluster.
All available gears display with the current
gear indicated. Press the – button again to
lock out gears beginning with the highest
gear. For example, press the – button or
twice to lock out 10th and 9th gears. Only
the available gears display and the
transmission shifts between the available
gears. Press the + button to unlock gears
to allow the transmission to shift to higher
gears. The transmission shifts within the
gear range you select.

I’d like to know how to get the gear display to stay on permanently. Once I turn it on, it may or may not be on the next time I start the vehicle. Are other people seeing this?

Can only be done through the ECU. I'll find out as soon as my tuner gets me my tune. I had it done on my Fusion.

I stumbled onto to that display myself and it wasn't until I found the section on Progressive...... in the manual that I found out what it was. Keep the manual where I can study it first thing in the morning :) Not sure I will ever use it for its intended purpose.
