It should be able to be done with a tuner in the future. I requested it on my Fusion Sport and they eventually accommodated.

PRNDS Indicator

The IPC uses the following messages to control the PRNDS:

  • Battery shed level request
  • Ignition status
  • Transmission gear display
  • Transmission gear display mode
  • Transport mode
  • Vehicle speed
The IPC receives all messaged inputs from the GWM over the HS-CAN3.

The GWM receives the transmission gear display, transmission gear display mode and vehicle speed messages from the PCM over the HS-CAN1.

The GWM receives the ignition status, transport mode and battery shed level request messages from the BCM over the HS-CAN1.

When the vehicle is in transport mode or during battery load shed operation, the PRNDS is not displayed upon entry or exit from the vehicle to prevent battery drain during longer periods of time when the vehicle is not in use, such as those experienced during vehicle transport.

The IPC also uses a park position detect switch (part of the selector lever) input to signal the IPC the shift lever is fully seated in the PARK (P) position. The IPC compares the park position detect switch input with the transmission gear display message sent from the PCM.

All of the Ranger trims show the gears, and can have the display turned on or off. Simply press the + or - gearshift button on the side of the gearshift lever to turn the gear display on or off. Whichever way you have it set when you turn off the vehicle, will be set when you re-start the vehicle. On the Ranger, because the display screen is smaller, you don't see all 10 gears like you do on the larger trucks. Inactive gears show up as white numbers, while the current gear shows up as a yellow number.

I was able to confirm the method @bandit67 suggested. Pushing the + or - buttons on the shifter while in "D" drive, and the transmission gears will display. Here's the XLT display:

This is correct. But make sure you realize, while you are in D, the + - buttons put it in Progressive Range Select mode. If you press the - button, you'll see the upper gears disappear from the display. That means you are locking out the trans from going into those gears. If you just want to see what gear you are in, always just press the + button to be safe and it will stay that way until you turn the vehicle off.

For example, in @rangerdanger 's image above, he locked out 9th and 10th gear. The trans will only shift up to 8th.
