Riddle me this...

Why didn't they hinge the Ford emblem on the tailgate? That way, when the tailgate is down and your backing up, the camera would still be facing to the rear?

Things that make you go... hmmm?

Or, alternatively, they could have installed 2 camera's, one facing up, when facing down. When the tailgate is closed the lower camera operates. When the tailgate is opened, the upper one operates.

More complex assembly, more things to go wrong, more cost to the consumer.....
That's true but if we're using that as the decision point one could say that about nearly everything on the truck that's convenience related: heated seats, remote entry, cruise control, dual climate control, power seats, auxiliary power points, push button ignition, parking aids, SYNC, etc.

I think I'd rather have an extra camera in the HMSL like RAM trucks have. A rotating camera just seems like it would fail quickly especially in snow/salt.

Probably because it's mostly only there because it's required by law. They just did what they had to to comply.

A small (1 cm square) mirror stuck to a piece of silly putty at a 45Âş angle just below the camera lens could be helpful for changing what the camera sees with the tailgate down. I've been annoyed by this from time to time as well... I may try that out and if it works well just keep it in the glove box until needed.

I'm pretty sure that everything you would be seeing.. would now be backwards... :stop:

a cheap back up camera from E-Bay could be the ticket.

Even when reversing with the tailgate up, I still find myself with my right arm tucked behind the passenger seat with my head cranked all the way around to the right, guiding myself by looking out the back window.

Tailgate up or down - canopy with dark tinted glass - it still seems to work. Maybe I’m on to something. ?

When i need to back into something with my tailgate down i usually drop a stick on the ground so i know when to stop. Works pretty well.

You're going to get an earful for saying this. haha I know I did when I said almost the same thing a year or so ago when people were also complaining about the back up camera. I hardly ever use the backup camera myself. Mostly use the mirrors because that's just what I've always been used to.

It reminds me a little bit of one of the classic Mitch Hedberg jokes, about how a broken escalator freaks people out, but in the end a broken escalator is just stairs, and we should know how to keep going when technology breaks or doesn't act the way we want. I butchered the delivery obviously, but the principal is there. haha
I'm a mirror guy too. About the only time I've used the camera recently is when hooking up a trailer.

But if I have a load of lumber (tailgate down) and backing up to our barn, the camera would be nice to see how close I am to the doors. I don't really care how the driveway crushed asphalt is doing ;)

the tiguan has the advantage of the rear window washer already in place.
just a little extra plumbing and voila, a little squirt here and there.

I get in the habit of just wiping the lens when i get out to do some tailgate curls....you know, to keep buff and ready to rumble when that crew who pushes tailgate dampers comes along and tries to intimidate you into buying one.
sometimes, I just stop in a live lane on the highway and rip off a couple sets.
once they see me flex, they whimper a little and go on their merry way.
Yeah I now keep a roll of TP in the truck so I too can wipe my Rangers’ glass!
