This is certainly an interesting concept. I wonder what the "reinforcement member" could be and what amount of load bearing it can handle for things that it could potentially be used for, like bike racks, RTT and such.
You make a great point here. I suppose one would have to decide if the trade off is worth having these rails since the mock-up doesn't appear to accommodate for a bed cover, even an inside mounted one.
