Personally I hate this idea. While I don't care for the huge boat anchor ⚓ FOB with the keyless entry, I'd rather it to this. My phones facial recognition doesn't work all that great and I have to use the passcode quite often to gain access. There's so many things in the real world that could happen and make this fail.

I know they say it can be updated but I see this as another solution looking for a problem. Then add the cost for this added technology which I'm sure won't be cheap to the already overpriced vehicles. Why not make them all keyless and design a smaller FOB? Unless there's an override (use of phone, or key) I don't like this at all.

What say you?

The idea here is that users could gain access to a vehicle and even start it up and drive it without having any sort of physical key or even phone on their person.

The user would simply approach the vehicle, at which point it would recognize them and grant access. Once the user is inside, the system would use cameras and sensors to perform facial recognition and allow them to operate the vehicle. However, the stickler here is the biometric system – it would use a print as a “trigger,” but would also allow for some variance, which is notable because biometric data – such as aging, weight loss of gain, and hair growth or loss – can reduce the accuracy of traditional biometric authorization.

Thus, the system outlined here would be able to continuously update itself on a regular basis and even use fingerprint data collected from the steering wheel and capacitive sensors in the driver’s seat as a backup, without input from the user. This would reportedly reduce the likelihood of failing the biometric authorization, which would obviously prove troublesome, while also preventing unauthorized users from gaining access as well.

So one important thing to note is that the article that Ford Authority is citing is from 2014, so I feel like this is a bit of chumming the water on FA's part. https://www.biometricupdate.com/201409/ford-considers-biometric-authentication-for-future-vehicles

Companies file patents all the time with no intention of actually producing the technology, only the intention of owning the idea.

The other thing is - putting the key on your phone takes cost out of Ford's balance sheet. They are "learning this" from Tesla. Like I always say on these conversations - they fancy themselves as an EV company now and they will emulate all of the EV companies. I wouldn't be surprised if this comes to fruition one day.

I think this is exactly what they're doing. Testing the waters 10 years later to see if/how it's accepted now. I hate this feature but I think you're right it may come about one day soon.

I was involved in a business adventure back in the early 90's. We had a design, got a patent, and our 'competition' had an older tech to do the 'thing' it was designed to do, but made it wireless so you could just install it without wires.

We laughed and laughed, that 'they just patented AIR".

They sold their designs to a bigger company. We didn't. Our solution was better, except it wasn't wireless.

Suck it up, folks. Stop yelling at clouds!

I too won't at all be surprised if this comes down the pipe very soon, but I've got the same issue with biometrics. I just upgraded my phone last month, and my old one which was from 2018 did the retina scan, vs. the new one which does facial rec. The retina scan worked probably 90% of the time, whereas so far it would be a stretch to say that the facial rec has worked even 10% of the time. I don't mind the idea of advancing tech & progress, but I wish they'd actually get the damn thing to work reliably before mass marketing it; it seems like the "beta test" is now the initial launch.

Mines the same. My facial recognition on my new iPhone works half the time. When I get a notification and look at the screen it won't open it to read it.

Also, What are you supposed to do when you're going to a hockey game? o_O

I don’t know what phone you use, but my IPhone has never failed to recognize me and I use facial recognition to access a number of apps. At my work, we are going to facial recognition as the means to gain access to our suites. It’s just Star Trek coming to fruition.

Works pretty well on higher end gun safes ...
Ive never seen them on one. Mine's a higher end Champion Triumph 40 safe and weighs 1,150lbs dry. I went with a regular S&G mechanical lock as they're pretty full proof. Ive had way to many problems over the years with electronic locks and once you do a dial a few times it's really quick to open one.

It's a new iPhone 14 Pro. It opens the apps fine just not the notifications or my reminders on my locked screen. My 12 was the same way too.

? Now that I think of it maybe Apple hates my face.
