Not a mistake , Ford has always treated the ROW with the goodies and their crap is saved for its birthplace , the good Ole USA !

Perhaps testing them in a country that won't sue them into oblivion if it turns out to be problematic.
China doesn't have our EPA either.

The ZF Sachs eight-speed automatic transmission is already in a lot of vehicles and can easily handle anything that the 10 speed can be used for (and more). Could also be used in hybrid and electric vehicles. Maybe a sign of what's to come. Of course we can't say what the gas mileage would be with it. Doesn't seem like it would be too much of a hit.

Was looking and this transmission isn't without it's issues either.

Seems no matter what direction they go we're still ? ? ? "??? - driver = *****ED!!!" ? ? ?

China and the market/industry there has seemingly long favored German brands like ZF and MTU. They're commonly used in heavy equipment produced for that market. Wondering if the ZF transmission is license built locally rather than "imported".

I'm curious if it doesn't have more to do with the tariffs and ZF being a German company as was mentioned above - vs. Ford being an American company.

Ford China is not Ford USA - it is a Chinese company. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changan_Ford

I look at this as more of a supply chain problem/solution - rather than an engineering solution.

Its a Joint Venture vehicle, take anything that flog Paul Maric writes with a grain of salt (emphasising the German part of the ZF 8HP, despite it being Chinese made).
The ZF 8HP is built in China, so are the two engines that they are using, that's why it has it. The 10R family is only built in the US. It's a tax dodge.

They've ditched the leaf springs because the Chinese will use it as a car, not a ute.

The Chinese love the Germans because the Germans like to make a quick buck and let the Chinese build (read steal) their stuff locally. ZF builds a bucket load of transmissions in China, MTU builds engines there, these are all 'Joint Venture' setups (just like the baby 2.8 Cummins). Local manufacture of the 8HP and no local manufacture of the 10R is the only reason this Ranger uses the ZF transmission.

Correct, it's a case of being able to source a Chinese made transmission and not a US made transmission.

FYI it's built by a different Chinese company, Changan only do the cars.
JMC do the larger stuff under licence. People calling this a Ford when it's as much a Ranger as the JMC Landwind was an Isuzu.

Very interesting! I did not know about that division. I'll admit I just googled "Ford China" and found my first result. I was only so certain of the fact that it was Chinese manufacture due to the price, hah!

The thing that bugs me is Ford is dropping the Edge and Lincoln Nautilus. I've had 5 and had great luck with em. Then to add insult to injury... They are releasing a new Nautilus made in China. Good luck with that.

I am sure the purpose of the 10 speed was EPA related. Not an issue Ford needs to solve in China, so why screw around with the expense. The takeaway is you should not blame Ford, you should blame the EPA.
