Had Ford change tranny oil in June. Couple weeks later towing my trailer got some funny shifts partway to campground. When arriving, saw tranny oil all over the front of my trailer... I am at 43,000 miles.

Back to Ford they determined they over filled, and corrected it.

Last weekend while towing to camp again felt a couple of bad shifts, and delays in upshifting. After parking at camp, saw granny oil all over the trailer front again!

After driving home cautiously and uneventfully, the truck went back to Ford.

Today was told the torque converter was slipping and causing the oil to overheat and boil out.

They said they will either rebuild or replace the tranny, so waiting on that decision. Good thing still under warranty!

I will update when I get updates.

Provided the converter is actually smoked, this is just another example of why it is so important to keep an eye on trans temps.

Probably what happened is your 'odd shifting' was the fluid being completely foamed and far too hot. The converter was probably not staying locked up as it should have. It doesn't take more than a few RPM's worth of slip to destroy a clutch, and there goes the neighborhood.

People......find a way to keep an eye on your trans temps, especially if you are towing or working the truck hard, even if you're just cruising down the interstate unloaded at high(ish) speeds, you need to know what's going on and catch it before you nuke it.

Sad that it went out, but great that it went out under warranty.

If they rebuild, they will likely use all the updated parts and you'll be good to go.

Question:
Ford changed tranny fluid - Was this a drain and fill with filter or a flush?

I believe it was a drain and fill. Asked about the filter and was told the filter was metal and would not not need replacing...

Warranty or not they were the last ones to touch it and the problem was capacity related. The results of that damaged regardless of how far into the drivetrain those problems go is on them to repair. This would be a slam dunk in the courts but take forever due to the process.

Ctech is right... these trucks when tip top are great performers but need constant vigilance. And remember even fresh ULV fluid is crazy thin, if it didn't stink so bad you'd swear it was kool-aid! It is not forever fluid... I wouldn't trust this stuff past 30K miles even if you never carried a load at all. Loaded I'd shorten that to 20K.

I agree that seems like a pita to constantly change, and I know I'm a broken record here but if you get the shallow PPE pan, Mike's Buildshop Dipstick, a new filter, 7qt of fluid, and something large enough to catch the slop you can dump and change fluid faster than an oil change. All that is about the price of a dealer's service for the same thing. Then every service past that is just the price of filters & fluid at the interval of your choice. All of which the install is just a few tools and no need to lift the truck. There was one bolt in all of that on the pan in the passenger side back that was tricky, but its a very easy install. Just messy.

The old adage applies good things come to those who wait ? however I tend to side with the gent pictured below. And for me with respect to tranny temps, another old adage applies :

out of sight out of mind.

Those 2 in the back are not bad. There is a hole in the frame that a socket will pass through, making it easy to torque properly. I have a Mishimoto deep pan. I changed the fluid yesterday and from pulling the plug to putting it back in was about 3 minutes with 7 quarts. Very fast.

Sounds like a solid plan!

And then you learn the non- varying engine temp gage is really an idiot “light”! Just like my 1995 Eddie Bauer 4X Exploder! At least the tranny in that lasted 100K!

In other words, the dealer blamed the torque converter, but they are pointing in the wrong direction; chances are the tranny would have been fine without their mucking it up. I tell you, once an aftermarket pan and. MBS dipstick are in place, don’t let anyone mess with the fluid, it’s strictly DIY.

After the dealer services it yes, by all means watch the tranny temps 🤣.

So Have a question regards tranny temps - assuming you monitor them - how do the ranger tranny temps compare with that of your F-150 - esp when towing.

Since the 10r80 uses only a fluid to fluid heat exchanger - I kind of view the power train with respect to cooling as an integrated package, so engine temps have a very close influence on tranny temps. Towing something anywhere near tow rating capacity, going up steep hills or cruising at higher speeds is gonna generate a good deal of heat, moreso I would tend to think from the engine as the 10r80 operates in lock mode most of the time.

So when I tow it's rarely exceeding 62 mph , even slower going uphill, owing to that I don't monitor temps. Primarily for towing concerns I'm considering moving to a full size vehicle.

Little bit warmer (The F150 is warmer that is). I had the PPE Pan on the on the Ranger and they don't make one for the hybrid 10R80MHT.

Once I got the level right in the MHT I'm able to drive at whatever speed, but I did have it slightly overfilled and had a runaway event, but not to the point I blew fluid out.

This is a pretty typical towing temperature view. Everything is usually right around those numbers unless I'm really hauling. Even in the 108 deg heat we drove through last year things stayed pretty well in check.
