It looks to me like an obvious attempt to stop rattling. I hate that also and took steps to stop it, just not in this type of dumb ass way. 😆 I just tapped a fiberglass shim into the small space in the top and snapped off the extra, no more rattle.

Looking at it I don't think there is room for anything other than an anti-rattle pin. There's not much room between the step and the hitch.

As I was watching, I half expected the bumper to end up encrusted in the SUV, but I guess that they at least did "low & slow" right.
That could have gone a lot worse. Anyone know why they were trying to tow that with the bucket dragging on the ground?

I usually use gasket maker to quiet stuff like that down. Works great and is easily removeable.

that's a new 1 for me. I bet it was to keep it from rattling. try acetone. It should soften it up

the red neck in me would cut the pin and pound it out. then wrap a chain around the step and good thick tree, give it some gas and see what happens
we think in a similar manner! i was thinking - i bet my sawzall would get that pin and then i could just chain the step to a tree and drive away lol.

Well it wasn't as big of a pain as I thought it would be. About 5 seconds with the oscillating tool. Which was a bit eye opening. The pin was able to tap out way enough. The step required some pounding but I was able to wiggle it out.

Nice work! Now that we're job done and in joke mode you just made me think of a post I saw on another forum. Someone posted a picture of their Oscillating tool and asked "What do you call this?"

My favorite answer: The Guybrator

Happy Memorial Day! 😂
