I visited a local custom exhaust shop today just to see what they had to say about a rear exit dual exhaust. The guy reccomended a Thunderbolt muffler saying it was a little louder than stock but not obnoxious. He also said he could probably take the stock muffler and create a dual exit. They way he explained it seemed logical, adding a dual flange to the exit side somehow. I have read about the Gibson and would like something similar, more flow with minimal extra noise. Thoughts?

It wouldn't surprise me if the gibson flowed better, our stock mufflers are massive. I can't comment on the sound level from the gibson, have you tried searching youtube for a sound clip?

Edit: I meant thunderbolt muffler not gibson, it's been a long day

The Thunderbolt doesn't very common in my limited searches. I'll keep digging. It would be a custom install with custom bending vs. a prebend setup like the Gibson.

The way the Factory Muffler is built any aftermarket muffler will flow better. That said I can't speak for the sound as that will vary by muffler. My opinion I feel Borla would make the best sound and I know they have a Cat Back kit

My Googlefu shows they are a copy of the flowmaster 40 series, that would be significantly louder than oem, but it would give you a decent idea of what it would sound like. Lots of folks here like borla and mrbp, have you looked into those?

My limited searches on here were for dual rear exit exhausts. There are a lot of results with the dual side exit exhausts which I am not interested in. I do believe the guy at the shop said something about the Thunderbolt being similar to another major brand. So your mention of Flowmaster could be right. I think I had Flowmaster on my previous F150 and it sounded good. But that was a 5.4L v8.

I opted for the Borla cat back system. Sounds awesome!

I decided to go with the Gibson dual rear exit. I watched (or listened) to this video on Youtube, probably the best comparison I could find.
