This will be huge if/when it comes out. Ford will blow away Tesla charging with these 5 minute quick charging stations.

Ford and Purdue University are working on a new cable that they say could help electric cars charge up in about the amount of time it takes to fill up a gas tank.

The technology is still patent-pending and the prototype cord hasn't been tested with an electric vehicle yet. But Purdue's research is a promising step toward making clean, battery-powered cars as convenient as ones that run on polluting fossil fuels.

They've done this by addressing one of the key challenges hindering charging speed: overheating. The faster current flows through a charging system, the hotter everything gets, from the battery to the charging cable.

Cooling things down can allow for higher currents and faster charging — and that's exactly what Purdue has done. Researchers developed a cable that uses liquid-and-vapor cooling to accommodate a current of over 2,400 amps, almost five times that of today's most advanced EV chargers. Tesla Superchargers, Purdue says, deliver up to 520 amps.

Only 1,400 amps are needed to bring charging times for large EVs down below five minutes, the researchers said.

Doesn't speed charging batteries reduce their life span at a faster rate?
It does because of the heat, this new charging system reduces the heat.

Okay, I'm full blown [r-word] today.
I get that this cools the cable down, right? But the batteries themselves become hot during speed charge.

For a base example, my phones USB cord remains moderately cool, yet my phones battery gets rather hot. And yes, it's a speed charger. So how does this keep the batteries cooler?

Any electric car worth owning will have a good battery temperature control system, which includes liquid cooling. Your phone has no such system.

That could be a game changer and shift my thoughts towards owning one. Living in a remote area in northern Michigan I've always worried about the lack of distance, time to recharge and cold weather impact on car batteries. With a 5 minutes recharge it elimates most of those worries.

I've been looking at the the electric f150 and want one, the only issue I ever had was the lack of range/how long it takes to recharge...this would defiantly peak my interest

Ok, but it aint gonna work in your garage.... I guess this if for charging stations?

In honesty, charging stations is the bottle neck here, so if they crack that nut, then it's a game changer.

Hmmm...gasoline catching on fire or 2,400 amps going sideways...life's interesting choices...

it's a cool idea but overall I'm happy with current state of EV supercharging at 20-30 minutes for a sufficient charge

The key to EV's and massive advantage is charging at night, or while running errands. So you effectively spend no time ever waiting on a charge.
You should rarely, If ever, need to go out of your way to find a charger
