I am pretty sure my trucks modem has died, its no longer communicating with Ford Pass and when I checked the the information screen in the SYNC 3 menu the modems ESN is blank. Are there any troubleshooting steps I can take before I schedule a dealership visit and waste half a day.

Mine was dead when I bought my truck used... couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t activate the app and finally took it in and they diagnosed this as the issue. Took about a week for them to order the modem then a few hours to install once it came in

I started thinking after I posted might just not worry about for now. I already used the free trial data I don’t have time to take off work since usually anything more than a oil change has to be scheduled during the week. I have remote start on the fob it don’t really use FP all that much with the iPhone issues. Seems crappy these modems die so easy though. Truck isn’t even 2 years old yet from its build date.

Just be mindful that any system updates you’ll need to do with a USB stick.

Honestly the modem is nice to have when you have ford pass with remote start. Thankfully Ford does not charge a fee for just using Ford pass. As for the mobile data? Well it is through AT&T so it isn't worth paying for it.

Hope this helps

I tried a master reset and that didn’t work. I pulled the battery cable for a few mins and that seems to have resolved the issue the modem id now shows on the about screen. Just a FYI to anyone who has encountered the same issue.

I've started having this issue. No WiFi coming from the truck, and no ESN in the radio. I took it to the dealership last week and they did some reset and got it back for a couple of days, but now it's gone again. I'm way out of warranty, and don't want to keep paying labor for quick fixes, so time for a new modem? Can you DIY?

I had my modem do that once. I pulled fuse 9 under the dash in the BCM and re-inserted it. That reset the modem, and it has been fine ever since. This is labeled Telematics in the fuse diagram in the owner's manual.

Yep, fuse 9 is the winner. We'll see how long this lasts this time. Thanks, I'll let you all know.

So I’m “old school” why do you need this anyway? So ford can’t track you?

I work out of the truck sometimes and need connectivity. In the mountains, there are places where AT&T works and other places where Verizon works, so my phone is on Verizon and the truck is AT&T. Basically, having carrier diversity means I'm online more often.

When I got mine, it was missing the fuse (dealer prep sucks). Check your fuse and make sure it is not blown. Otherwise, the Telemetrics Modem will need to be replaced, probably with a 4G Modem.

I resolved my issue by pulling the negative battery cable and letting the system reset itself.

The other day, my truck wouldn't unlock within an hour of my last drive. After using the key to open the door, no interior lights came on. Tried to start it, and nothing happened. Checked the battery,, it was showing 12.75VDC. A quick Google search led me to use the Ford Pass app to remote start. After that, it was fine. The dealer wouldn't be able to replicate the issue, so that was out of the question. Moral of the story, sometimes the app can be useful.
