I've been through a few of those. They're easy if
A: you know how they work
and
B: you're paying attention
We have one as well. Both roundabouts are two lanes north and south and single lanes east and west, just to make it more confusing to those entering.

It's rare to see a semi on this road, but why he (or she) tried to turn down this really tiny road, I'll never know.

Probably one of the ones who shouldn't have a license. Like the one in FL that tried to make a U turn in the middle of the highway.

That will happen because of inexperience mostly, and a lack of preparation by the driver.
I learned very early to be sure I had shipper and receiver contact phone numbers so I could call and get exact directions in, and to ask if there were any restrictions or problems getting a tractor-trailer in to their location.
I didn't have the benefit of GPS back then...only a Rand-Macnally truckers atlas...and even that couldn't be completely trusted to tell the whole story.

Gonna be a bear trying to get that rig out of there!

Weird thing is, that little road just loops back around to the main road, not even two blocks long. There are only a couple houses/farms on it. I don't even think it's paved. Maybe he thought he could use it to turn around.
Yep, seriously poor planning.

A couple of alternate theories:

That trailer is a flatbed with a "tarp". It could be he was to deliver something to a farmer down there and the farmer said something along the lines of "you'll be fine.. trucks deliver here all the time"...not realizing this particular shipment was sent on an 18-wheeler and not the normal 10-wheel flatbed delivery truck.

Driver relied on GPS directions and mis-programmed the delivery address (and didn't satellite verify the GPS destination to see if there might be an issue in or out). I see that happen a lot here at the guardhouse when people program an address and make a mistake on "Lane" or "Drive", etc., and should be in Goodyear or Avondale instead of Litchfield Park.

Good theories.

Litchfield Park is a tricky one. That city jogs in and out through Goodyear and Surprise (I think Waddell too) and is very confusing unless your GPS is frequently updated. Even then the GPS has been wrong and has taken me to the wrong LP location. I remember when I first moved there and had to do an estimate in LP and headed over towards the area just north of Dysart/Litchfied Rd only to find out there was no house there. It was way over near where you are now in that part of LP. Now I had to backtrack and call the customer for directions and apologize for being a little late. Not a huge deal but I'm one who's always 10-15 minutes early and luckily the customer wasn't in a hurry to be somewhere else.
