Computer on wheels issue

We are traveling with our trailer. We were out yesterday sightseeing. Stopped for gas. Got back in and CarPlay wouldn’t connect. The E locker randomly locked and wouldn’t unlock. Then ASS went weird. Then tow haul wouldn’t engage. After shutting down for a half hour I got E locker off, and we went back to camp. I disconnected both battery terminals for an hour and 15 minutes. Towing today all seems well.

Gremlins are common with this truck. Because your Auto Stop/Start “went weird”, you might want to have a proper check done on your battery. ASS is a bit of a canary in a coal mine for batteries that are on their way out.

Other than that, I’ll leave it to other, wiser members to chime in on probable causes.

The CarPlay not reconnecting I would lean towards diagnosing as a pure software bug. The rest of it sounds more likely to me as software behavior secondary to a hardware issue. I say “secondary to” in the sense that a fault in one sensor or subsystem might intentionally cascading to others as a safety interlock because they depend on it, even if in some non-intuitive way.

Went about 160 miles today. 150 of that towing 4600lbs. Mostly flat, some wind, and a few rolling hills. No issues.

Elocker, ASS, and tow/haul are all buttons on the upper multifunction switch. Carplay uses the USB interface which is on the same branch of the wiring harness. I would guess you have a wiring harness issue.

Must be a fluke. Everyone knows there's nothing wrong with these trucks!

This may sound crazy, but check your fan clutch sensor harness to make sure the support hose isn't failing. Mine letting go caused a huge electrical gremlin party to be hosted in my Ranger and all of the different functions of my truck showed up at that party.

Fan hose has been and is still solid. I’d suspect mice first, but just changed the cabin air filter before I left and no signs.

You ought to read up on the issues with the brand new Chevy Colorados and GMC Canyons. Lots of folks being left stranded and requiring a tow. The occasional glitches in these Rangers are minor league in comparison. All things mechanical can fail. Just saying.

Anytime I’ve had issues with Car Play not working I’ve had to shut my phone off and power back on and Car Play worked fine. It’s happened once in my Ranger and a couple of times when I had my Maverick.

Went 90-100 miles today. Half of that on sandy roads. No problem. Will plan on towing 350 miles tomorrow on 2 lane. We’ll see, but I don’t expect any problems.

Went fine today. Another 300 and I’ll be at my eclipse location which is forecast for clouds, but I know I’ll get. 5 minute cloud break at the right time in the right place.
