Retired, work is a four letter word.
I can confirm after using it, that the SureCan works without a funnel in our truck and is *super* convenient.

https://vpracingfuels.com/product/vp-surecan/?c=237&

It's a compact footprint and fits in the bed easily even with a tonneau.
Amazon has these at $10 cheaper, but won't ship to Calif (Boo!). The company will ship to me but... $76 each for 5 gallon w/tax & shipping, that's a LOT for a gas can.

Yup. 4WP is also not selling them in CA for some reason, they said that they had some kind of hold on them but couldn't elaborate on what. I am happy to pay $74 direct (that's what it was shipped to me as well) for a can that 1) I can easily manage my self, 2) doesn't require any kind of extra spout or funnel to use in my truck, 3) can easily fit in my bed under the tonneau cover without taking up a bunch of space, and 4) is still certified and safe for travel and transport.

I'll probably almost never replace it, it's a good investment IMO. For comparison, a 4.5gal RotoPax is $120, and then you still need to worry about the funnel itself. Easy math for me.

I have a few of these, and purchased them to ship directly to CA via eBay, since other stores (eg amazon) wouldn't ship to CA.

I paid $30 each for 2 5 gallon cans made of the same poly, and $15 for an easy pour spout the fits the capless fill port without the need of a funnel, and work fine, and they fit easily under my BakFlip. And these are double handle cans so easy to lift and hold.

Okay we all know gas limits for towing.

What would be be the best 5 gallon gas can as back up for towing, easy use etc. It needs to fit under a tonneau.

Maybe other options?

Big proponent of the 5 gallon VP Surecan. I've used this for years in my offroad trips and it's fantastic.

I have my eye on those - after I saw how much the fuel bladders cost - https://www.giantloopmoto.com/product/armadillo-bag-liquid-power-reservoir/

I really like the idea of them, but can't justify spending as much for a 5 gallon container as 3 5 gallon jugs . . .

Just read this on the website: Armadillo Bag is not a portable fuel container as described by ASTM, EPA, ARB or other state and federal agencies. Armadillo Bag is NOT intended for fuel storage, transport or use as a gas bag in the USA. Armadillo Bag liquid power reservoir utility bladder is not a food-grade product, so we do not recommend its use for potable drinking water without filtration.

so, they sell a fuel bladder but it isn't a fuel bladder bag? LOL

Yeah, essentially it's not approved in the US, but it is everywhere else, but they'll sell them here regardless for "off-road use only" which can, mostly, be acceptable, just like the flexible hose fuel bottles that everyone uses for their offroad toys that also isn't approved for use in the US, but people use anyways.

Wavian (not any other knock off brand) steel can. $95. Then, buy replacement free flow nozzle for a few bucks. There's videos of setting these full of fuel in a puddle of gasoline, setting it all ablaze, no failure. Wavians are the safest. They even make 2.5 gall ones, but probably not what you want for towing purposes.

My other hack is storing enclosed inside my Snugtop canopy. I bought 4 'Super Crates' milk crates, these: https://www.milkcratesdirect.com/super-crates/s-crate-1

These 'super crates' have an interior dimension of 13.7 x 13.7 x 14.5" and fit x2 5 gall 'jerry' cans side by side. Vinyl records, too. Camping, I carry my Wavian beside my Sceptre military plastic water can. 3 of these super crates fit side by side between the wheel wells, I've got them parked up against the cab side of the truck bed. They're great for lots of stuff, and you will not find milk crates that are 13.7 x 13.7 on any shelf. I've tried, lol. You've got to order them.

Anyway, I've done the White Rim Trail, 2 full weeks in Utah, 2 weeks in SE Oregon/SW Idaho canyon country, other shorter trips, lots of offroad miles. My setup never failed or leaked. Easy to secure. Just a bit of a pain to get the can out but easier if you store it closer to the tailgate I'm sure.
