You might look at the ARB bumper, I put one on after a valet parking attendant gifted me with the right rear pushed in just barely touching the body. It seem like it was around $500 bucks. The only drawback I had was trying to get a pin in the trailer hitch, I had to cut away a little metal, but not a big deal.
How would you rate the quality? It's $800+ now and that's without the bottom protection tubes.

It's a nice bumper, but I don't think it is what I would consider a tough off road bumper. I didn't get the tubes either. I think for $800 bucks I'd look around.

I could totally see that. The height of the Ranger ass end is too high (Sorry! Couldn't pass it up. ) for easy access. I find myself most often using the tire as a step and climbing over the side. Climbing up onto the tailgate is tough. And using the tiny visible corner of the bumper when the tailgate is down is an accident waiting to happen. Though I still do it occasionally.

In fairness to Ford I do look at it sometimes and think "If I was 30 would that tailgate height be that big of a deal to me?" Not sure. But at double 30+ it's a tough climb.
I'm with you as far as age goes. All I do if I need to get in the bed is sit my butt on the open tailgate and swivel around. Use the side rails to prop yourself up if necessary. Or the old school way, stand on the tire and swing your leg over the side rail and stumble into the bed. Not recommended at this age though unless you're particularly nimble.
