As far increasing size, It really depends on what the performance expectation is. If handling/steering response is high on the priority list, then increasing to a taller tire with more sidewall height may not be the right choice.

That being said, there are tire models in plus sizes that are tailored more towards on-road performance., even under the all-terrain segment. The Michelin defender LTX M/S is a solid choice and a couple A/T models that come to mind would be the Continental TerrainContact A/T and WildPeak A/T3W.

One other question if you do not mind, would an SL tire be just fine for a normal use Ranger? If an SL is good for 2000+ lbs per tire and our Rangers with the curb weight, passengers and full payload are under 7000 lbs, it seems to me that they would be totally adequate.

As long as the tire you choose has the same load rating or higher than your factory tire you are good. This information is on the plackard inside your drivers door. Your Ranger came with SL tires from the factory.

I have no affiliation with any tire guys either.... I'm just a regular guy hanging out in U-Taw! (definitely not as cool as "Phuket" tho!)

I put BFG KO2 LT275/70R17 on my truck immediately after purchase and have never looked back. The tires have an excellent ride on pavement (both wet & dry) and have never let me down in snow/dirt/mud, etc.

I rarely actually "need" to use 4WD (2WD gets me thru most stuff) but when in 4WD, the Ranger performs like a "snow-cat"! (it can get pretty crazy in the canyons here)

Sure, it's mostly the truck doing the "heavy-lifting".... but where the rubber-meets-the-road, I would definitely give the BFG's a solid thumbs up.

Oh, did I mention how damn good they look?

For the weight of those you can use the 285 one and they weight less. Still looking really good.

Duly noted.... those (285's) will probably be my next set along with the Ready Lift Intrusion Beams for additional clearance.

Although, with how little I'm driving the truck.... it may be YEARS before I need tires!

I had a set of Dueler REVO’s on my old Sport Trac. Great performance on and off road and any weather but they wore out kinda fast.
