Well my Ford is doing Ford things and my back up camera no longer works. I either get a message saying it’s unavailable or a black distorted screen. Either way, I can’t use it. It is a 2019 Ranger and despite the recall announced last September for these exact symptoms, mine is somehow not included. Has anyone had this issue? If so, what was the fix? I can get the camera itself for like $70 on rock auto but want to diagnose the issue proper before throwing money at the issue.

Make sure that your Sync version is 21388. That is the latest version and fixed a lot of issues such as yours. Also, you should check the inline connector at the tailgate. Unplug it and reconnect it to clean up the electrical connections.

Is that for the 4” screen?
If you have Sync, what is your version number? Also, check your connector at the tailgate. Unplug it and then reconnect it to see if that helps.

When I get back to the truck, I’ll check the software version. It’s a non touch screen but may still have sync.

Then you are on the original factory released version of 3.3 (early builds) for your issue I think it's either the camera or a bad connection (Inline connection) feeding the camera. The underbody connectors have some history of (corroded connections) due to exposers to elements
If you are handy with a (meter) we can T-Shoot and isolate (wiring vs camera) with the understanding that the camera is always powered (engine running) but the video feed is what gets turned on and off via the reverse signal circuit and by your post the camera is powering but you do not have the video signal

Update to version SYNC3 3.4.23188, as this is the latest and solved many Sync issues. If that doesn't solve the camera issue, check camera cable connections, starting with the tailgate connector.

You are correct and I’ve got some free time tomorrow to crawl under there and check. Thanks!

If this was version 3.4, I would agree 100% on a software induced issue but i think it's the camera or a dirty connection.

4 connectors to check for integrity - there are some others, but these are the external ones

1. The camera connector itself
2. The Tailgate Connector C411 - where it connects to the truck harness
3. C422 - Inline connector on the frame - Contains the (Video Feed)
4. C408 - Inline connector on the frame - Contains the (Camera Power Feed)

I highly suspect C422 as the issue

Will do! Definitely want to check connections and wiring before ordering parts.

Seems like this is a fairly common thing across all Ford models. Fortunately, I’ve never experienced any issues on mine or the wife’s Ranger. A few of the F150s my dad uses for work trucks and my stepbrother’s old f150 had issues with the back up cameras either not working at all or flipping the image.

Yea they’ve had a lot of recalls for them. They recalled the 2019 ranger for back up camera issues but somehow mine isn’t included.

That’s weird. Maybe they caught what was wrong (or thought they did) and changed something on yours. That’s odd there would be a recall but yours isn’t mentioned.

I agree. Rockauto has the camera for $70 plus shipping, I was just wanting to ensure that I wasnt changing a good part out first. After looking at the connectors today, I think that is the next step
