Does anyone know how the avg mpg is calculated? Does it go by every so many miles or fuel used and how often is it calculated?

Miles divided by fuel used. I reset mine every time I fill up.
If you want to be more accurate, write down the mileage when you fill up. Then the next time you fill up subtract that mileage from the current mileage (or reset the tripometer when you fill up) and then divide that number by the gallons it took to fill the tank again.

I have an STX with the base dash display and there is an Average MPG by itself (which I never look at) and another Average MPG on both tripometers. Those are the two I reset when I fill up.
I average 19-20 mpg on every tank.

Last month I averaged 22 mpg mostly highway, when I fill up it says 288 miles to empty but I always get 320 or better

The computer calculates it every time you fill up. Most Rangers are off by a good 1-2 mpg from what the screen reads. You can adjust it by using the link below. It will take several full tanks to correct it so don't keep adjust it. I started at 944 and now it's close to with a tenth other two.

Also the easiest way to keep track is to use the Fuelly app. You just input your info after filling up and it calculates it and stores it for you. This is great for checking it against your trucks readout to see how accurate it is. You can also input all your receipts too.

Mine is off by at least 10% because of tire size I never fixed that in forscan so when the dash says 65mph I am doing 71mph checked by Sat./GPS so I can only guess my MPG reads low by 10% also ....
Trip 2 I set in Jan. so I see what I do by the year, last year over all I averaged 18mpg

I’m also using Fuelly.com. I’ve seen as much as 1 mpg on a single fill up

The DTE estimate is next to useless when you tow, disconnect and not tow, then re-connect and tow. It builds its estimate based upon what the average was for the last tank. If it was smart, it would keep two averages based upon when there is a trailer connected and when not.

I took picts of trip 1 and trip 2 I forgot LOL
trip 1 I use for temp or by the month and trip 2 I reset in Jan. if it goes down a lot fast it most likely bad gas or something about to fail, if it only loses 1 or 2 mpg a year maybe time for plugs or sensor...
I got it 2 years ago at 13k I was getting 22mpg, maybe next summer I will try plugs, at 60k I may even splurge and give her an oil change, it has only had one but it was Amsoil LOL

What do you mean only one oil change? In 4 years and 50K, miles?
Did you ingest some of that Amsoil and rotted your brain?
No sane person would go more than 10K, and smart people do it every 5K.
That Amsoil is not what you think it is, no matter what that 'snake oil' salesman told you.
