I did a search, and could not come up with a specific answer for this. When my Rangers auto stop turns on (engine off), I feel and hear 2 “clicks” in the foot well area. More or less it sounds like it’s coming from the engine compartment. I’ve had plenty of other vehicles with this auto start/stop feature and have never had any sounds associated with it (besides normal engine cranking sounds). Is this normal? If I missed the thread, can someone please direct me to it? Thanks in advance.

I believe it's just relays and where they are located. Nothing to be concerned about. You could search for the relays and put something over them to make them quieter. I'm sure other vehicles had those relays in the engine bay.

That's interesting. I don't remember hearing that. Does it sound more like a relay clicking? Or maybe something with the HVAC system?
I thought it was with the HVAC system but it’s been off. The clicks are evenly spaced and go off every time the “stop” feature activates. I’d assume as another poster stated that it’s the relays most likely.

New vehicle, new sounds. Been meaning to ask if it’s normal for a while now. I hate going to the dealer for no reason. A relay sounds about right. Thank you.

Mine makes the same two thumps from the footwell when auto start stop shuts off the engine. My thought is it has something to do with the brake booster "locking" in the vacuum since if the engine is off then there is no vacuum to assist the brakes.

Never notice until I read this thread. When starting up, there are a couple of relay clicks from the footwell, closer to the passenger side. Nothing to worry about. FWIW, my wife's Subaru Crosstrek is way more violent with the auto stop-start on start up. My Ranger is peaceful enough I usually don't turn it off.

There is no locking. It's a one way valve that has been used for a long long time
