Ok I have been observing this more closely the last few days. The auto dim does not work unless it is really dark. I even tried covering the light sensor on the dash. Didn't help at all. Must not have anything to do with the auto dim. Is there a Forscan setting to adjust the sensitivity?
Not that I've seen.

To be clear, you want the brights on before the system decides to turn them on, right?

Front camera at the rearview will determine when brights are on. Dash sensor will determine when lights are on.

Just turn the brights on manually if you want them on before the system turns them on would be my suggestion.

Mine, brights that is, seem to switch on when there's still quite a bit of light out.

As of Sept. 1 this year its now law in Canada to have auto headlights + taillights on with DRL's. The dash must also stay dimmed unless the headlights are on.
Canadian lawmakers don't know how digital displays work?

I love the auto dim highbeams. though they did make my laugh for a couple of miles last week.

2 lane country road, enough traffic the the high beams would come on and off every 15-30 seconds.

The trick is I had my fog lights on as well and high beams disable the fog lights.

I had also recently switched my fog lights out for color changing, amber/white led bulbs .

The high beams would auto go on, fog lights off. high beams off fog lights on amber, high beams on fog lights off, high beams off Fog lights White, Repeat half a dozen times inside of 2 minutes.

You can program the fog lights stay on with high beams in Forscan. I like it much better that way!

That's what I have been doing, but it's really annoying. I would like not to have to worry about. It's like having to get used to 2 sets of circumstances.

I've found that learning to deal with these modern conveniences is part of the deal.

For example, the auto dimming highbeams on my wife's CX-5 operate more ideally, to me. They simply auto dim, you have to turn them on, they turn off and back on automatically. They still switch back and forth too often, but that's another story.

On my Ranger I have a problem with the fact that they turn on automatically. I don't need or want brights in town. So when I start the truck at night I try to remember to turn the brights on then off right away, taking away auto control. Then when I get out on the 2 lane backroads I'll turn the system back on.

It's as simple as this. The tech has a certain set of rules, logic, that it follows. Learn and understand the logic, and if you want it to work differently, work around it, or don't use it.

Sucks but that's the way it is.

Lane assist, and ACC, are the same. No tech is perfect.

this is basically the worst-case scenario for the auto-high beams: just a little bit of traffic. In the 'burbs or the city the streetlights will generally keep them off, and way out in the country they stay on pretty much all the time, but in that zone of "little road with just too much traffic" the only solution is to override or feel like a lunatic flashing your lights for no reason.

Ok, so on the way home tonight the auto dim worked great for some reason. Right when I was ready to start using high beams they came on automatically and it wasn't very dark yet. Then they worked well the rest of the way home. I don't get it. Hope they work well in the morning.

So after having the truck for almost a year and driving in 4 seasons, the auto dim officially drives me crazy. If it's dark enough for the headlights to come on, why won't the auto dim work? It has to be really dark. One morning it was really dark but the moon was bright. Auto dim didn't work. Covering the sensor on the dash does nothing. WTF?

So your brights are coming on too quickly and not dimming when you would like them too? Keep in mind, in Auto, it won't activate the brights at all until you reach a certain speed. Supposed to keep the brights off while driving in the city so some of ya'll are going too fast in the city lol.

My problem is the auto headlights come on when it starts getting dark. But the auto dim doesn't start working until its much darker. 2/3 of my commute is backroads, and I need the brights to help see animals sooner. I have to manually switch the brights on and off until it gets dark enough for the auto dim to start working.

I personally don't care for it. I like having control over high beams and don't feel the need to let the vehicle decide.....wish I had auto windshield wipers like my Kona though.....pretty handy.... ;)

This is the sort of scenario I encounter a bit too often and convinced me to disable the auto high beam functionality.

I live right on the edge of town and encounter roads with that sort of traffic pattern very often. Moreso when it gets dark earlier, when more people are on the roads. Lots of newer traffic signs are so reflective that they cause the system to trip. Also very twisty and hilly roads that swing the lights all over the road. So even when there's not much traffic, I'm often blasting my brights into someone's bedroom or living room or whatever.

Because of the twistiness/hilliness, it's actually pretty rare that I am driving fast enough to out-drive the low beams. So I mostly don't even use the high beams. I kick the fogs on if I need a little bit more light close and low, which is something I need more often.

Yeah. My auto headlights work just fine.
Its my auto high beams that act quirky, causing me to overide the auto feature many times

yeah, seriously considering going all manual. Thing is, when it's dark enough, it works great. So I am torn. If I turn it off, then the auto headlights won't come on and I can easily forget to turn them on.

Yes! Do you find it is when it's not very dark? Or when do you have the issue?
