I apologize if this has been addressed in another form. I am just curious to know if anybody else can audibly hear the shift solenoids shifting especially gears 1 through 5. The noise that I’m referring to kind of sounds like a stepper motor. I just need to know if other people experience this or if I should take my transmission in because sometimes when the vehicle is restarted it almost feels like it slips between gears 1 through 4.

Thank you

The 10R80 is not the quietest transmission, that's for sure. It does get quieter as it get some miles on it but you can still hear it especially with the window down. If it is slipping get it checked out. They are know to be a little shy on transmission fluid from the factory in some cases.

You might be hearing gear whine on these transmissions in the lower gears. I have that in mine, and it is normal according to a Ford Technical Service Bulletin.

Whine from the pump, yes. Solenoid noise, not on mine. I thought it was finally done being a shithead until a recent high mileage trip and it started with the hard shifts again. Got home and it cut it out. Not a huge fan of the quirks of the 10R80.

I do not know what the pump would sound like. But I can tell you each time it goes to shift a gear you hear like a stepper motor like noise. The windows have to be down you can hear it.

The 10R80 seems to have about ten personalities. You never know which one is in charge of the shifting.

OK thank you everyone for responding. I’m glad I’m not the only one that is experiencing weird shifting. Maybe I will see if I can record a video of the sound and put it on YouTube and post a link on here.

Yep, mine has been making similar noises since day 1. Still shifts smoothly, and it's never a concerning noise, so I attribute it to the 10r80 personality.

If you have about 10 minutes this Aussie seems to hit the nail on the head.

It behaves differently depending on time of day, temp, how long you've driven and whether you meant to drive hard or slow...doesn't matter...it decides what's best for you...

I agree with the the first part of your description. I don't agree with it deciding the best for me. Ford has a lot of work to do to get there. The most adaptive automatic transmission I have experienced was the DSG is my 2013 VW GTI. It was able, for the most part, to decide what was best. Ford tried to knock off the VW/Audi DSG and failed.
