Another Towing Question

19 XLT did not come with towing package.
I have a trailer icon button on the console.
I added the Ford 7 Pin and harness
I added a curt hitch 600 tongue wght and 9000 tow wght with distribution hitch.

Questions?

Is there something else I need to add to meet the 7500 tow limit?

Has anyone added a transmission or oil cooler for towing?

Will adding Bilstiens or other rear shocks help with the towing?

Anyone have experience with Curt's new bluetooth trailer brake system?

4053 Lbs Dry 450 Tongue. 25 feet with tongue. 8 ft wide and 10.6 ft tall. Guessing actual frontage will barely meet the recommended max 55 max.
I know this subject has been beating to death and would appreciate any advise.

Check the curt, I think it was 6000# max limit. That said, there is nothing physically different between the tow package and non-tow package rangers except for the 7-pin and the hitch. No oil cooler is required as there is already one where the oil filter attaches.

I added Fox shocks because the back like to porpoise and bounce when I was towing my TT.

I don't like bluetooth attaching me to my brakes, I know that's controversial, but IDC.


My trailer is a Keystone Passport 2920BH Grand Touring (2019). It's bigger than yours in every way, and does just fine behind the ranger if you're comfortable and paying attention.

All you need at this point is a Trailer brake controller. I have the Ford Redarc one. Install was a pain but it works w/ the emergency braking which is really nice in my opinion.

I have a trailer icon button on the console. The icon is a trailer pic, however it is for hauling too, and is standard. Changes how the transmission upshifts and downshifts when a load is carried (bed or trailer or both)

Has anyone added a transmission or oil cooler for towing? Truck is set up for it already. Its a good idea to let it idle for a few minutes while in park or neutral to cool off the engine/transmission

Will adding Bilstiens or other rear shocks help with the towing? Stiffer shocks may help or may not. I have airbags to help with the sag

Keep in mind I have not towed with my new shocks yet, but everyone I talked to, and everything I read said it will help tons. I tow my trailer with an 800# EZhitch which isn't cranked up that high, and it's fine.

Reading about the haulgauge tells me it’s not going to be very accurate. It’s just using accelerometer readings to approximate a weight which is inaccurate in the best of times.

The reviews were all over the board on amazon. Clearly not as accurate as a scale but perhaps better than not going to a scale and relying on an educated guess. End solution should still be check at the scale.

Keep in mind the trucks rating is 7500 max and 750 tongue weight. The hitches rating does NOT change that. Just means you can pull up to the full rating of the truck.

That's a really cool product. We were going to get it for our previous motorhome because Thor didn't run the brake controller and it was a HUGE expense to do so on a rig that big. We ended up getting a different motorhome and going full-time so we never needed it.

Not sure if you know this or not, but the controller is not dependent on your bluetooth connection. Once you program the controller, the settings are stored in the controller itself, so even if you drove away without your phone, you would still have the same brake control. The only thing you would lose would be the "panic button" to hit your brakes in case your trailer started going haywire back there, which I've never had happen. Probably because I drive a realistic speed when pulling something back there that weighs as much as my vehicle itself! I see they have now come out with a button that you can install to your dash for braking control instead of using your phone, which is a much better option, imo. It IS still bluetooth, though, so it could lose connection as well.

I think that's a pretty bold statement to make that "everyone is aware". From the discussions I've had on other forums, that is clearly NOT the case. Do I think a physical hard-wired button is preferable? Absolutely. However, there obviously is a need for this product or it wouldn't be out there.
