IIRC Ford is using Borg Warner turbos (reliable) and it appears to be a simple design - perhaps not integral with the exhaust manifold like many makes which makes it far simpler to rebuild or replace.

Are they? I thought they were Mitsu's. @P. A. Schilke Do you know?

Edit: I secretly hope they are Borg's. Near bulletproof with proper oil changes!

Hi Scott,

Do not know the sourcing of the Turbo on the 2.3L Ecoboost...

best,
Phil

Guy down the street from me is an engineer at Borg Warner and he's got 3 Fords in the driveway...Mustang, Focus, and F150. I have my suspicions. ;-)
This is the kind of confirmation bias I need! How much boost can I run now? 30psi? Lets just round up to 40

Oh yah the "truck guy" they sent in to tell me about the ticking time bomb said the turbo replacement is about 6k and something i should expect in 5 years.
Their "truck guy" doesn't make any sense from an economic standpoint. Let's say he was being honest and every Ranger owner can expect to need a $6k turbo replacement after 5 years. How in the world can any company stay in business if they're selling a protection plan for anything less than $6k if that plan has to pay for that replacement?

When I bought my Ranger, it was already pretty late by the time the sales manager and I came to an agreement. The finance guy was anxious to wrap up and get home, and he still had one more transaction to finish that evening. His sales pitch on the extended protection was to briefly look up from his computer and say, "You don't want extended protection, do you? No? Ok." As he went back to typing stuff into the forms, he said, "If this was a couple hours ago, you would have gotten a much longer pitch on how great those plans are." Then he stopped, looked me straight in the eye and said with a serious tone, "And if anybody asks, I did give you the long pitch."

Turbos are time bombs eh. This country runs on the back of 18 wheelers that I am pretty sure all run turbos. Don't see them exploding all the time.

He must watch Scotty Kilmer on YouTube alot. That dude also hates smaller displacement turbo DI engines.

Did you race Peugeots ? My dad bought a turbo diesel 505 after seeing them used as taxis in NYC, it was a solid car, the 505 had massive coil springs , but then he bought a 405 gas engine and it was not a good car.

They are Borgs. Confirmed in previous post via part number on owners warranty repair order.

I always cringe when I have to go talk to the finance manager.

My parents are in their 80’s and recently bought an Acura RDX.
They asked me to help them buy the SUV because they hardly ever buy new. This was their first new car in 30 years. When we went in the managers office it was 3 o’clock and I knew it was time to put the boxing gloves on. He started out on extended warranties but i shut that down pretty quickly. So he stuck to the tire and wheel warranty. He was selling the warranty for $2499. I told him I could buy 4 rims for $899 online and the tires were $225 a piece. He laughed at me. I was pissed. So I pulled up his online store and showed it to him. He shut his mouth after that and finished the sale. Would not even make eye contact with me. WIN!

I did start using my credit union to buy cars and that helps not have to deal with the finance manager as much, too.

I agree, but my Ford experience was different. I was more than an hour after they closed and had made an ass of myself already. Financed thru USAA so no dealing with banks etc. So it was just signing papers. No push to buy anything extra. He even forgot to take my down payment. That got a bit weird but I had to go back anyway.

I just picked up my truck from the dealer on Saturday. This is only the second new car ive bought, the first one was a Subaru and i had terrible experience with the dealer on warranty claims etc. I resisted the finance guys sales of all the ford protect and extended warrantees telling him i needed time to research them and that if i needed them I would make a purchase before the factory warranty was up. He didn't like that and brought in the "guy who knows trucks really well". He tried to come in and tell me i needed it, that the turbo is a ticking time bomb and that ill need to replace it. I laughed and said well maybe Im buying the wrong truck and I should reconsider and honesty if I didn't have confidence in the truck or hadn't waited 4 months I would have walked out that moment.

That said anyone turbo go boom here?
I would make a complaint to Ford about these bozos.

1. Ford will send you a survey about the sales experience. Flame them in the survey, especially after taking the strange approach of telling you that the vehicle they just sold you is so poorly made..
2. Ford extended warranties are available at a bargain from Flood Ford and @Zach@granger. I think they're worth the investment if you're going to own the truck long term. You have until the original factory warranty expires to add one.
3. Turbos of yesteryear were finicky and were almost certain to fail long before other engine components. Turbos made in the past 20 odd years are as reliable as any other component.
