To all of you that have added TM to your trucks and wanted to also enable Trail Control to your non FX4 model.

A few of us on this forum have been working on this going through each and every as-built/VIN from other vehicles to find the changes needed to Enable Trail Control.

Here is the list of changes (IPC (Instrument Panel) PCM (Powertrain Control) and ABS (Antilock Brake) Modules all have changes to them)

7E0-163-02x2xxxxxxx1xx xxxx without
7E0-163-03xxxxxxx44 is elocker 5 is without
7E0-163-0413xxxxxx0Dxx xxxx without
760-02-01x5xxxxxx5 is FX4 1 is without
760-02-02xxx3xx3 is FX4 equipped, 2 is without
760-03-01xxx7IE: 4 No options, 5 has elocker, 6 has ACC, 7 has elocker & ACC
720-06-01xxxxxxxxx88 FX4 Option, 0 doesn't
720-07-018xxxxxxx8xxx xxxx xx CS 8 = elocker 0 = none
720-07-02x3xxxx3 is FX4 equipped, 1 is without
720-10-01xxx4xxxx4 is FX4 (0 is without)
And it's all good until you enable the ABS module while then puts the trunk into a panic attack with errors such as:

1661701707756.webp

1661701713614.webp

And DTC errors of:

1661701734369.png

These codes meaning:
u2101-55 (Module is Incompatible (NOT CONFIGURED)
u2101-57 (Incompatible Software Component)
u1000-00 (Generic Failure code)

U0418-86 (Invalid Data from Brake System Control Module)

Here is what is going on:

Each module contains:
1661701798242.webp

The Firmware is based on your VIN (thus options on your truck) and we cannot change (yet).

And according to FORSCAN:
1661701840548.png

Which is EACTLY what we are seeing. (Sourced https://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17208 )

So today, we cannot add that feature/function to our trucks, but it may be possible in the future. I believe this is all within the ABS Module. The ABS Module is the only module that in Fords Module Configuration document talks about IVD initialization is required for this component. All of the modules (ABS/IPC/PCM) are listed as being Reprogram/Flash capable but only the ABS Module requires IVD.

So that is the final chapter on Trail Control for now... Maybe in the future Forscan will be able to update firmware.

Many thanks to 5G Dan-O for testing and trying these changes. He has the perfect truck because he has the e-locker option without FX4.

This is a bummer, but thank you for the closure.

And although FORSCAN CAN program firmware for modules:

The firmware comes from FORD. Which matches your VIN

And there is a huge risk of:

Which nobody wants to risk that.

Thanks!! Very useful information, i can only imagine the prigramming needed in all midules to work together as a team to nakebit work. The brakes need to know what the bcm is doing and the pcm and tcm, and the seat heaters too. So can be very mod intensive. As easy as it sounds

Thanks agin for the effort put in

So frustrating and disappointing...

We figured out how to add ACC including finding missing CAN wires all over the truck, adding non-existent cruise control module and brackets and we can't do this one little thing.
Weird that we can enable ACC in the ABS module but not T/C - their functions are so similar.

@daczone thanks for all your code mining.
I'm not giving up yet. I think I will try to get the ABS module out of the donor truck to experiment.

Did you every try that yet?

I too would like the TC function added on my 4x4 with rear locker, switch is on the shelf in the garage, bought it when I got the TM switch. Is it not possible to get the firmware for an FX4 model from the site and then not flash it right away, instead save it and use for this update to non-FX4 trucks?

I'm read of people changing the VIN in the BCM/ABS via Forscan and doing a firmware update via FORSCAN, but I am NOT that brave.

My first goal to a proof of concept.... Plugging in my known FX4 ABS pump, enabling TC in Forscan would prove that firmware is the missing piece.

I agree, it would be way safer to have a spare module for testing with.

Unless the VIN had a bit that would indicate the FX4 package, I don't think the VIN in the module is important, other than that it is matching the VIN on the rest of the modules in the truck. I know there is no way the module is loaded with the whole VIN asbuild database just so it can use that for enabling a feature, but I do believe there could be more than one firmware and the Ford site sends the one that your VIN's asbuild database record shows is needed. You clearly should not do an inhale/exhale from non-fx4 firmware/module to fx4 firmware/module as the configuration would be wrong. If possible an inhale from a working fx4 and then change the VIN to yours and exhale to the fx4 firmware/module in your non-fx4 may be the safest testing.

The ABS Module has very little data in it. 4 blocks for the VIN and then 3 blocks for the options

760-02-01
760-02-02
760-03-01

which seem to correspond to
