Most of the time when people have problems like a CEL it's because the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) got fouled from too much oil on the filter.
Or they oiled the wrong side?;)

I had a K&N in my old Sport Trac for literally 200,000 miles with no issues. Just cleaned and oiled it once a year. Most of the time when people have problems like a CEL it's because the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) got fouled from too much oil on the filter.
Can you attest to the cleanliness of the intake parts downstream of the filter? Just curious.

So after doing a quick look I guess K&N did buy AEM(on the filter side at least), but the filters are still different. Those that state they are the same are wrong. An AEM filter does not require oil and will not let small particles through like a K&N

I don't recall anybody saying they were the same.

Honestly, I don't know why you guys go through such angst over air filters when the OEM is more than adequate.
Perhaps, but a reusable filter is preferable to me. And I don't have to worry about the dealer charging me for a new one without my consent if they see a sticker on the airbox. Put 155k miles on a Focus with a reusable filter and never paid for a paper filter.

James, you started this thread by telling the world you oiled your air filter wrong. You know what I never have to worry about? Oiling the wrong side of my air filter. Or using too much oil. Or not enough. Or buying K+N's special cleaning solution, or their special oil made from the scent glands of the adolescent Koala bear during mating season.

But hey, that's just my opinion. You do you.

That's why I am looking at a dry reusable option. Man, I thought I was pretty clear.

There is a right side and a wrong side to oil? I'm looking at K&N How To and it makes mention of oiling on both sides.

How to Clean K&N Air Filter Products - Instructions | K&N (knfilters.com)
That's interesting as it doesn't say which side to oil. I am pretty sure there are other sources for proper oiling. I did see a video that shows a guy oiling the incoming air side. It just makes sense.
If you had a cone style filter you wouldn't oil the inside.
Correction, I read it wrong. It does say oil both sides. Huh? That does NOT make sense.

Man I see that pop up in numerous internet search results. I wish Motorcraft was tested in that lot.
Probably roughly equivalent to AC Delco, most OEM stuff seems to be of approximately equal quality irrespective of the parent company.
