There are a couple of threads but not a real discussion. Are there any printers here?

I am looking to get into it, but would love to talk about it, get inspiration, etc. I am looking at the Ender 3 v3 right now because the price is right and it seems like a really good machine.

  1. What printer do you have?
  2. What's your coolest print?
  3. What guidance do you have?

I have had 3 printers. An ender 3, a mingda, and now an ender 3KE. The ender 3KE is so much better than the others it is not even close. The ender 3 is a takes a lot of adjusting to get something to print. The KE just works. As you will find out, it is not like using your paper printer. Lots of prints fail and you have to make some type of adjustment to the object and try again. I know the ender 3 is cheaper, but dont buy it. Buy the KE one.

That's great, thank you. I have been looking at the KE. I didn't realize it, at first, because their lineup is incredibly convoluted.

Draw some paper drawings (around 1500) to 2d and later on to 3d as a gig some decades ago. Pumps mainly. Was pretty good for technical drawing classes in uni.

Always tought to get to this 3d printing stuff, but laser sintering looks to be the way to go, but costs way too much for a hobby.

So I'll pass this one.

I need to hang my LEGO and the cost of the hangers is the same as buying the printer. Then, there isn't much cost to playing around with it. Its a cheaper hobby than trucks, cigars, and LEGO.

I remember when I bought my last printer.. One could argue 13 color 44" wide roll-paper printer might have been overkill, but then again, I needed a printer.

I have the Creality K1 and have been through about 40 rolls of filament with no issues. Recently bought the scanner to go with it and that's a lot of fun. Easy way to copy parts. This is a video about the scanner. Scanning my granddaughter next week. Hopefully she can stand still a couple minutes. Anything core xy should be good and there are many affordable choices.

For my budget, I think I need to go with a bed slinger. I am interested in the scanner though.

Core XY means the bed is stationary? Still learning.

Yes, the light weight extruder on the x and y axis move. It makes them faster and higher quality prints. This is a very low end scanner but works pretty good for $200. There are much better available. Cleaning up scans can take time with the low end units.
Decide what materials you will print because many create toxic fumes that require a vented enclosed printer and heated chamber.

I wouldn't print in the kitchen. PLA is fairly safe but it still emits fumes and particles when printed. Many other filaments can be toxic. Have fun.

That's my whole downstairs... ha! I did the test print, but moved the printer afterwards.

Tested my next project. I have 12 of these cars to hang. First print was flawless, now to print 11 more. Then I can move on to the larger Technic sizes.

When you get around to printing stuff for the ranger you have to use ABS filament. The others will sag after a summer day. I use petg for everything. It is a bit more heat resistant than PLA and still easy to print with.

I’ve been researching better materials but… I’ve had it less than 24 hours so far. ?

I have an older Ender 3 Pro, well it was. All that is left of the E3P is the frame, stepper motors and hot bed base. Running BTT SKR Mini E3 V3.0 MCU with Klipper firmware controlled by RPi 400, Sprite Extruder Pro and BLTouch for bed leveling and mapping. I have a few beds I swap between, glass and a set of textured steel plates.

Details of my system, including cost and where I would start if being today, got posted here: https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/wireless-charging-install.2704/post-786372
