Put the 88 in your boat and lawn equipment, but don't worry about up to 10% E. Just stay at a high volume pump.

What's more important, ethanol-free or octane level?

Our local stations have 87-91 with ethanol OR 88 with no ethanol. Thoughts?
I wish I could find ethanol free near me. The only place I know to get it is at a Marina, for twice the cost per gallon.

I just want it for my lawn equipment and boat. E10 is fine for cars, I think the extra octane boost is more beneficial.

My dad owned a gas station, I remember him telling me it’s not the Brand of the fuel, but it’s obviously the higher octane! Also never fuel up if you see a gas tanker unloading fuel into the gas stations underground tanks, when this happens all the debris from the bottom of the tanks start to churn and this could end up in your vehicle.

E0 will net you about 4% better fuel economy over E10 (though slightly less power at the same octane level). Choose which to fill up based on the price. And if you want max performance (aka, when you're towing), go with the highest octane rating to get the most spark out of the engine and therefore the most power.

The tanker warning was true decades ago. I doubt is holds true at high volume stations today. I know Costco where I fill up has a delivery every other day if not every day. That volume wouldn't allow much sediment to accumulate in the tanks. Besides, your better stations replace the pump filters regularly which is "supposed to" catch those particulates.

Octane is nice but the other additives help keep the engine clean.

I add a bottle of Sea Foam every 2 or 3 fill-ups. Been using the stuff for 10+ years on everything -- mowers, weed whackers, snowblower, motorcycle, 4-wheeler, boat motor, etc.

With direct injection, those additives don't actually do anything for you from what I understand. Am I wrong?

One would think the additives help keep the injectors cleaner and the spark plugs, exhaust valves, EGR stuff, and any other stuff downstream from the injectors.... ???

Filled up my new Ranger with Amoco/BP Ultimate 93 octane and definitely noticed a difference, quicker off the line and pulls harder, smoother too. I used to run Ultimate in my motorcycles all the time, it made them purr and kept the injectors clean as a whistle.

Ecoboost engines do like premium. My 2.7L runs like crap with 87 but with 93 it turns into a beast. Idles better, runs smoother, pulls harder (no surging from timing being pulled) and gets about 2mpg better.

Reading the Ranger owners manual as stated! Using a higher octane will be beneficial to the engine and maybe performance, especially during hitter weather (turbo factor) and when towing!
