Good Morning,

Wonder if anyone has removed and replaced a wheel stud on the front 4x4 hub?
Would like to avoid removing the hub if at all possible - but not sure if that can be accomplished with space is available??

Bought a used 2019 Ranger 4x4 from a dealer with aftermarket wheels and much to my surprise the existing front wheel studs do not fully penetrate the lug nuts. Checking the back, the wheel studs are flush with the nut when fully torqued. Lug nuts are non-acorn style traditional, so one can easily see stud/thread penetration.

Perhaps the front hubs were R&R'd at one time and the aftermarket front hubs have shorter wheel studs?? This all was revealed when i tried to replace the existing aftermarket tire/wheel combo with a stock Ford tire/wheel combo (which actually resulted in even less stud thread penetration on the front(s) - which is even more peculiar to me). All of this was considered to try and improve the ride given the aftermarket wheels aren't hub centric and the tires are way too aggressive and more suited for pure off road.

Hoping that there may be a relief area in the control arm/spindle that would enable some clearance if the wheel stud was rotated around to enable removal and replacement without removal of the entire hub.

When i brought the truck back to selling Ford dealer and explained the safety concern with the front studs they didn't deem it a safety issue - ridiculous..... but i was able to persuade them to provide 12qty p/n ACPZ-1107-A 1X replacement wheel studs - which i intend to replace on the existing hubs.

Ford Online show p/n KB3Z-1104-B hubs for the front on a 4X and would also wonder what length stud is on these - if anyone knows (perhaps Phil who seems to have forgotten more than most know about this series of truck).

Must say that with the heater going out because the design issues and the dash having to be removed as well as the transmission issues mentioned in this FORUM - i'm really wondering if i bought a junker......

Thanks for any reply and insight,

John

Haven't done it, but I think you would only need to remove rotors to get access.

Any Update(s)?

I just completed an oil & filter change on mine and did a wheel/tire rotation too.

Well,
[Driver-side front]

I end-up snapping one these studs completely off as I started to torque the lug nut.

So I loosened all the five remaining and checked the studs...
Seems like the other five are okay & mounted the wheel/tire torqued down.

I'm gonna "save" the original hub assembly & just press-in new/replacement studs...

Was wondering how hard to do this at home... [pressing new studs]

With no wheel on the hub, you should be able to use a wheel lug nut to pull the new stud into the hub by tightening it against the hub. It might help to thread the nut on backwards to accomplish this (if you have a lugnut without a cap).

They make a - Wheel Stud installer, I have never used one though, as I have a stack of washers and a conical washer to go on top (always) use a (Spare-Lug Nug) to pull it, so you do not stretch the treads of the (In-Use Lug Nut)
The trick is getting the new stud started in the hole (angle), sometimes it limits you - IDK on the Ranger, what we have - you will note some aftermarket studs have the (head) filed down, this is the reason for it -Gives you a slight angle advantage

I'm doing this work in the driveway & kinda worried about "banging-out" the broken stud and possibly damaging the existing wheel-bearing in the process...

So I figured I'd simply "swap-out" the hub assembly & later find a shop with a press to deal with the existing hub assembly.

I couldn't find any pics of the Ranger spindle/steering-knuckle and figured there's no room around to slide the lug-stud from the back.

Plus,

I can only seem to find a Dorman-Brand replacement-

Can anyone post any links for quality brand replacements

After searching, thought about ARP Bolts:

ARP 100-7725
But found some reviews saying these are shorter than what they are and some saying going up one size to-
ARP 100-7713

Guess I'm about to spend $80-$90 to figure out which one is closest to the OE length

How much torque do you apply to break the stud?

This is what I use on ALL my rides & I give it a light snug when the handle is collapsed [short] when I lower the tire enough just to touch the ground.

Then one light snug with the handle fully extended & lowered abit more where there is some vehicle weight on the wheel/tire itself.

NOT a lotta of pressure
