This post is to inform Members of what tolerances are run on the valve clearances for the 2.3L and how this is achieved. More informative.

From an older Focus Forum they do run fairly tight valve clearances on the 2.3L

Measure the valve clearance using feeler gauges.
Permitted valve clearance: inlet (0.11 - 0.18 mm) .006" for .15mm
Permitted valve clearance: exhaust (0.27 - 0.34 mm) .012" for .30mm

Here's a link to how this is achieved when the car is worked on by a person.

Through factory automation Ford would have some system to achieve the correct valve clearances by selecting from different bucket or tappet sizes.

If it's like Subaru buckets, they have a certain clearance in the bucket for startup and then a hydraulic lifter takes up the clearance once oil pressure is established.

No pump up or hydraulics on the modern 2.3L. Just enough clearance for lubrication.
