It has been 13 years since the minimum wage was last raised. waitress and wait staff it is $3.26 up to $6.35 plus tip. up to the max of $15 ish or dollars an hour based on state. Most restaurants pool all tips into one pot and also split it among the bus boys and cooks too so they can pay those people less per hour too.

Remember back when a good tip was 15%? now a minimum required tip is 18% and a good tip could be 25% or more. Why is this? Why does everyone always question minimum wage but not tipping rate. and mandatory tipping. Hell My pizza place's asks you to tip when you pick an order up. (not delivery but pickup)

Tipping has lead to horrible underpaid wait staff. maybe if we got rid of tipping and paid them a flat rate the quality could improve.

Most likely not as then restaurants would actually have to pay their staff.

Since 1968 if minimum wage followed inflation then it would be $21.00 an hour.
That is how much inflation has gone up and how badly we are paying the majority of people in this country.

Tying minimum wage to productivity is a GROSS misrepresentation of what the minimum wage is meant for.

Adjusted for inflation, based on 1968's minimum wage, it would be $13.16 today.

Almost every state in the union pays at least that already. Many pay much more.

So, I go to lunch today... Order my food. The attendant asks me my name, I tell her "Jim".

I get the receipt and it says my name. I'm curious so I look in my old paperwork only to find out that my real full name is "Gymnasium".

Looks like I've been spelling it wrong for 64 years.

Who knew?!!

Inflation is compounded interest on wages.

The unfortunate and unexpected results of EEOC, Civil Rights, Fair Housing, Hart-Cellar, etc. Instead of bringing the 'underprivileged'(?) up to the level of the 'majority', these program 'abominations' did the exact opposite.

For a number of years now, the 'majority' is being deliberately and actively replaced with the 'underprivileged'. Most recently, outright extermination of the majority is being attempted with bogus 'vaccines'. Next could be world war, mass starvation, mass civil unrest, etc. to achieve the well stated goal of 'massive population reduction' down to a 'manageable level'. Manageable for whom?

My final three employers were literally 'rat traps'. Once respectable, well paying jobs requiring knowledge, skill and perseverance. Little turnover. Now, reduced into race-sexual orientation-'impossible equality' non sense that retains and promotes the worst possible people in order to keep the so-called 'diversity-inclusion' goals. Needless to say, pay-benefits-working conditions-competent employee retention goals collapsed.

I retired on full medical disability 6 years early - never would have made it to my prescribed retirement age - many haven't. Many left with numerous health issues or just plain dropped dead on the job. Many of those who left were 'afraid to rock the boat' and have nothing as a result. I went the legal route and made out well enough.

Don't allow yourselves to be badly used and thrown away like refuse on the side of the road.
The first iteration of this failed experiment was "desegregation and bussing " in the mid-70's that in the end did exactly what you expressed, lower the bar so all could get over rather than raise the skills of the "under privileged" so the 'old norm' could be achieved - the exact opposite of the planned. Watched this unfold in NC while stationed there.

hell, most of the 20 somethings around here cant tell time on an analog watch, my daughter (i am ashamed to say) is one of them. she has one of the trendy huge ass faced analog watches and i told her a couple of weeks ago the time on it was wrong. she looked at me with a duh face then proceeded to tell me she cant use it to tell time anyway.............my retirement looks bleak lol.
Bought my granddaughter an analog Winnie the Pooh wall clock for her study area - just so this wouldn't happen...

Sales tax is 5.5% including a .5% county tax where I live. I typically pay with a debit or credit card nowadays, but when paying cash, I sometimes like to figure out the amount of my purchase including tax, if there are enough people in line ahead of me. Then when its my turn, put the exact amount of the bill on the counter, especially before they are done scanning everything.... "Ok, that comes to twelve dollars...and thirty...one ...cent...s..."

Dear caught in the headlights look every time!

There is a movement afoot to become a "cashless" nation following suit with some Scandinavian countries.

I just need to give my 2 cents on this;

As an individual, I have little to no influence on the following generations.

I am but one grain of sand

I go through my life with one foot in front of the other just like everyone else.
Influencing the next generation at times does seem daunting... Simply leading by example is a good one, however, requires they pay attention...

My influence on the following generation included my three children. Whom were required to know and understand the need for basic life skills; how to make an informed decision through research and consideration of more than one aspect of a given issue - choices, not blindly follow the latest and greatest noise. They are all in their late 20's through mid 30's and are absolutely amazed as well, at the lack of skills and abilities of their peers. We all have opportunities daily to influence young people. It's grandchildren time now for me.

If I ever push for a doctorate in HR (masters complete), I am quoting/using this thread in my thesis.
Was given a saying by one of my Commanding Officer's that I used in my masters work, allot, "People are messy" referring to the baggage all of us have and pack around.

And just like a stray dog if you don't feed them they'll go away. We have panhandlers here at every entrance/exit ramp holding signs begging for money. It still amazes me how many people give money to them when most (not all) are to lazy to get a job. I was getting off the ramp and saw one walking towards In N Out burger and followed them there. You guess it they got into a nice BMW and drove away. It's to bad because these are the ones who ruin it for those who really are down on their luck.
Precisely why I ignore them now...

Who said anything about being or feeling like a genius? I would think that comment hit a little close to home but you show to be an engineer. Unless that means you drive a train or still work on paper with a slide rule only, I would assume you can find the power button on your PC and don't fall into the category I was poking at a bit.

On the generations and tech: I would be willing to bet more boomers still use AOL to get on the internet than had anything to do with the design or building of tech-related stuff.

On a similar note I find it sort of funny how well the younger types can use the tech but have ZERO clue how it works. I landed at the right time to have to walk both ways uphill in the snow before I could get my OS to work after using fdisk, hitting it with a rock, and hoping I had all the drivers ready to go.

Also agree on the generation thing being a bit silly as a lot of people cross those lines in terms of knowledge, manners, work ethic, etc. Its only a bit better that astrological sign.
Agreed...

Been building my own systems since the 8088 chip and dip switches were the norm. Last build (this year) for the Bride was light years away from that system and far easier since now everything sets itself up through the BIOS... You know the DOS language speaking thing on the motherboard. AOL was in all honesty a thing, then, but is now way back there in history with the fiber feed to my remote mountain home here the latest upgrade. I do love the fast availability of information, education and facts (using a grain of salt) of the internet, compliments of the "old folks" who came up with this technology, but have some intrepid dread where this is going.. read: AI...
