Last night I was just relaxing and wanted to look to see if there were any additional rankings for midsize trucks. I found one from Edmunds where they look at the updated 2020 trucks. They ranked the Ranger in a tie with the Frontier (really) for last. When purchasing the Ranger I looked at a lot of reviews and rankings and the Ranger was always near the top . So why does Edmund's dislike the Ranger?

Everyone has their own opinions. This one you can classify as stupid and disregard. I did research as you and found this as a bad review.

The ONLY rankings that count for our truck are real owners who make the decisions with their pocketbooks.

I have no idea why Edmunds or most of the others big name magazines give the Ranger a bad write up. For me personally I have never read any of these magazines to determine what vehicle I want to purchase. Sure I read a lot of the online articles a few years back when they stated the Ranger was coming back to NA but never once did I turn to Edmunds or Car and Driver. They all seem bias (just like the regular news media) so I might glance through one but I never base my purchases on their "opinions".

With that said when I was deciding whether to purchase a 2019 or wait until the 2020's what I did was test drove two different Rangers (about 2 weeks apart) and read as much as I could here on Ranger5G. There's nothing like real world experiences from every day people to give you the true facts....Unless you're on Tacoma World than all bet are off. :lipssealed:

When shopping for a car I do look at all the reviews from the site. Usually you can come up with a common thread (i.e. the Tacoma is old and the seating position). Reading most of the sites they usually would rank the Ridgeline #1 and then 2,3,4 would be the Ranger, GM twins and Gladiator followed by the tacoma and then the frontier so Edmunds seems like an outlier - was very disappointed as I usually have found their reviews to be pretty good. I like reviews to help me look for things.

Very similar to talking heads in sports. They get paid too much for their words which are meaningless. There is no integrity in journalism any more.

I watched a YouTube video a while back that had where the reviewer didn't like the Ranger. Said at highway speeds it was squirrelly. I test drove a 2019 Ranger, unfortunately the salesman didn't listen to me when I said I'd like to test drive it up to 60 mph and we were just on city streets. Was one area I was able to get it up to 50 mph for about a mile and it don't seem squirrelly to me. My wife and I liked the Ranger better then any other 2019 and 2020 mid-sized truck we were in. Now need to find one the color we like with the options we like and get a test drive out on the highway.

I hate when salesmen come along on a test drive. I like to do things on a test drive that they probably wouldn't want me doing (evasive maneuvers, hard braking, hard accelerating, just general throwing it around to really test it out). Luckily when I went to test drive the Ranger, they only had a SuperCab and my wife was riding shotgun, so he wasn't about to squeeze himself into the back seat. haha

Quite frankly, I am amazed that any salesperson would let somebody test drive a vehicle when they are not in the car.
When I test drove a 2019 Taco last year, I was glad the salesperson was there during the drive because I grilled her on its woeful acceleration and the lack of rear disc brakes. Believe it or not, her response was that drum brakes are better for off-roading, my response to her rocket scientist like explanation was if what she said was true, Toyota would equip the truck with all drum brakes, her silence was bliss after that.
What did you have to leave behind as a security deposit, the keys to your Porsche? Deed and title to your house?

Nolan - I can you tell the Ranger is not squirrelly at high speeds (maybe over 85 as I have not had it up that high) it actually rides very nice at highway speeds and I have all the confidence in the truck. I can say they might have had lane assist on and didn't realize they were drifting out of there lane - but even then its not squirrelly about it. They should drive my 2016 Wrangler now that thing was squirrelly over 60.

Also, note for some reason the dealers love to put high tire pressure in the Ranger's which can make them more bouncy - Once I brought the pressure down its a much better drive.

Lastly - find one close to the way you want then beat that one - and buy the color you want and enjoy

He had a copy of my driver's license (so he knew who I was and where I lived) so it wouldn't have been that hard to find me if I didn't come back. Everything is just a little bit more relaxed and "yeah sure go ahead" here in the rural parts of the country.

I don't like salespersons in general, but I really don't like them coming along on the test drive because I don't like hearing the sales pitch constantly. I want a break from it all so I can actually think about what I'm doing and not be bothered by them asking "so what are you thinking". By the time I go into the dealer (or any store usually) I already know everything there is to know about the product I'm looking at and am basically just ticking a couple boxes to make sure I'm correct (namely my opinion on ride quality in this case). I know more than the salesperson about the product, so there's nothing they can say that will persuade me in any way. In your example I wouldn't have needed/wanted to asked about the rear disc brakes on the Taco, because going in I would've already done enough research to know what I needed to have an opinion on whether they were good or not (not that you didn't already know either of course). Because obviously the salesperson in your story didn't know enough to give you a correct answer, so why trust them at all.

Salespersons' job is to convince people into buying something by saying pretty much whatever they have to, whether it's factually correct or not. A perfect purchase for me is dealing with no salespersons at all, so any chance I have to be rid of them during the buying process I'll take.

Sorry this turned into a rant about sales. haha

When we test drove our C-Max, the salesman let us take it out by ourselves. We actually test drove two vehicles. He couldn't go with us because he was the only salesman there at the time. It was the first time I ever got to do that and it was REALLY nice. As I recall we just left the keys to our Explorer and he took photocopies of our licenses.

It's actually a lot more common than you might think. I test drove the new Audi E-tron a few months ago and the salesman didn't come with me. Walked into the dealership, told him I was interested in checking it out but no intention to buy today. I asked for a test drive, he said sure, and I was on my way. I did the same thing a few years ago with the Jag F-type too. Just asked for a test drive and the salesman didn't come with me. It was great!

I test drove Ranger's at 2 different dealerships - One salesman went with me and gave me the worst offer. The other salesman just gave me keys to different trucks. This salesman also told me to take it home and keep it a while to see what I think and the family thought. I guess he knew he had a great product and price. His approached worked
