My passenger side valve cover has these long thin bolts holding cover. It says 8mm deep socket to take them out. That’s way too big. 5mm socket to small, but 5.5 mm are too big. What’s the trick?
any help would be appreciated

Hey Jeff,

It sure sucks to get stuck on a project like this.

Unfortunately, this forum is geared to owners and enthusiasts of the 2019-23 Ranger. Way different animal altogether and has a 2.3L 4-banger engine.

Fortunately, some of the members here came from earlier model year Rangers and might be able to help. You should also try other Ranger forums dedicated to earlier model years, just to hedge your bets on a solution.

Best of luck.

Those splined sockets will grip off size bolts sometimes.

It is an SAE 5/16" bolt head. Fits snug as a bug!

I am assuming that they are all the same size, I tested on the drivers side front intake side of the valve cover.
