So, my 2021 Ranger Lariat 4x4 just started a new trick where I step out of my truck and press the small indent on the driver’s side door handle and the truck locks – well, kind of. I heard the clunk noise only to reach over to the driver’s side rear door, and it was unlocked. I’ve tried this several times with all the other doors and they are not locked as well, including the tail gate. So, I thought intelligent access key battery. I replaced the battery, and the same exact condition exists. The locks work fine when I use the intelligent access key and/or my FordPass on my Samsung.

My Motorcraft 94R battery was my next suspect. So, my friend was kind enough to loan me a new Odyssey Performance 94R battery to see if it would make a difference…. Same condition exists. My Motorcraft OEM battery, which is now roughly four-and-a-half-year-old, tests out (out of vehicle), at 1067 CCA tested with 800 CCA rated, and 13.22 VDC with 100% SOC.

I have also performed the BCM reset…. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The last thing I want to do is take it to the dealership….

I am not sure how you are checking the rear door handle for it being locked, but if you grab a door handle to open it, it will unlock all the doors and tailgate. Try this, lock the truck with the key fob, then move the fob away from the truck and test to see if all the doors are locked.

Does it do the same with:
Using the FOB (Lock Button) will all doors lock?
Or
Using the Passenger Door (Handle Lock) will all doors lock?
or
Using either interior door lock button?

You may try using the (key-blade) and @ drivers door -Rotate the TOP of the key towards the front of the truck (CCW) - This should lock all doors
Try cycling it CCW & CW ---CW only unlocks the Drivers Door, but CCW Locks All Doors.

Hopefully it just needs a cycle reset, it may have a code locked into the BCM, might check and clear them if there are any stored.

Although (True) IF you have the 4-Door (Prox Handles) Ford dropped the rears in mid 2020 (?)
The easy way to visually tell is the Rears (If Prox) will look the same as the fronts, if they have been converted to standard handles (the small indent) (Lock Sensor) is no longer present.

Okay, so I forgot to mention that it will happen on the passenger side also. Yes, the FOB that I referred to is the intelligent access key. I have keyless ignition on my Lariat, so I just keep the FOB in my pocket. When I stop and step out is when the door lock issue occurs. If I use my FOB they all lock correctly… This was happening before the Odyssey battery swap with my OEM 94R, so my Lariat was actually without a battery for about 20/30 minutes to swap batteries. I figure that would be enough time to reset whatever…. I have an OBDLink MX+ and Torque, plus FORScan. I don’t have any codes by the way!

Second part of your reply - yes, only the two front doors have the indents... rear doors are regular latches.

RangerBill, sorry - I just overlooked your post. Yes, beacuse the clunk noise sounds funny I started to check my rear door just to make sure. That's when I realized that my vehicle wasn't locking. Now I wonder how long the condition has existed! How many times have I walked away from my truck and it not be locked! Scarry!

My 2019 has the rear door handle sensors which looks like were eliminated on later years. What happens if you touch the front passenger door handle to lock the truck? Does only the front passenger door lock, but all other doors are unlocked?

With the battery being 4 1/2 years old, personally I would replace it anyway. They do strange things when they begin to fail even when tested ok.

I thought of something else. Do your turn signals flash when you touch the outside of one of the front door handles to lock the truck? If not, one of the doors or tailgate closed switches may not be indicating that they are closed.

You can try a few things to see if you can get the (Lock Sensors) working.
But to confirm - if the Dr or Pass sensor is pressed (only) that door is locking - correct or are none of them locking.

Try the Key-Blade as noted above and also cycle the manual lock (black) on all the door jambs.

To test - move FOB away from truck or grab the handle from the top & bottom without placing your hand behind the handle.
Behind the handle is the (unlock) sensor.

You may also try - unselecting all (Locks) settings in the IPC , cycle IGN off and then go back in and reselect the options.

If none of the above recovers the (Lock Sensor) then one of the sensors is most likely bad - to isolate you will need to pull the door panels and disconnect either side and see if the lock function comes back.
Do both sides independently.

This will create an Mis-Lock and with the FOB it will give a double horn and the turns will not flash. Mis-Lock equals one or more of the locks including the hood latch is not closed.

There is a mis-lock setting in the dash menus. If checked or unchecked, does it over-ride this? I have not found an explanation for the mis-lock setting.

Might not honk the horn if mis-lock is not enabled. The reason I asked him is if the turn signals don't flash, then a door or tailgate or hood closed sensor may not be indicating closed.
