That's interesting that it's law to have a second set. Always cool to hear the different laws and customary things from other places, even places not too far from where I am.

I'll definitely get a separate set of wheels as I have always had for my snow tires in the past. Definitely pays for itself quickly. Plus I don't like paying someone to do something I can very easily do myself, like changing a tire.

Thanks for the info!
It's not law to have a second set, but after a certain date (Nov. 1 IIRC) your tires better have the the park mountain/snowflake symbol on them. Lots of folks around here that drive trucks seem to like the Goodyear Duratracs. They run them all year. Three peak or not, I don't consider them winter tires. I have dedicated winters for my Colorado on steel rims. Steel rims are cheaper and pay for themselves quickly. I'm going to try the OEM tires on the Ranger for now, but the first sign of misbehavior and I don't care what I have to give up, I will go and buy a full set of snow tires.

I drove around in the lot on the mountain and wasn't too impressed with the stock Dueler A/Ts that came on my XLT. There is absolutely no substitute for winter/snow tire compound. Except maybe studded Duratracs. MAYBE. The more I think about it the more I'm leaning toward picking up a set of steelies and dedicated snow tires for the Ranger. I've run Blizzaks on all my other cars for 10 years now and love them.

yes you are right. i misinterpreted my recollection of the law. in Quebec you must have winter tires on dec 1st through march 15. winter tires being defined as having the mountain and snowflake pictogram. and a minimum of 2/32 tread. having driven in every region in this country in mid winter, i will never drive on all weather a/t or all season through a winter season... except in victoria vancouver

I haven't gotten a new set of wheels yet but on my last car I bought a set of sensors and they lasted the 2 winters I had them swapped onto the car. It's not a pleasant feeling spending $400+ on the set but the light bugs the shit out of me.

Many will just drive with the TPMS light on throughout the winter. I couldn't do it, I hate lights on the dash. My winter tires are mounted on my stock wheels and I'll just be putting a second set of sensors in whatever wheels I find to put my summers on.

You can get aftermarket sensors for much less, here I sell them at work for $33 each and that's in Canadian dollars.

Oh yeah, I work at a dealership and didn't pay quite near that but that's the going rate. I think I paid like $54/ea for OEM ones. Still not great but it was worth it to me to not have the light on.

I personally have never bothered with the TPMS sensors.

No worries. The only reason I even knew what the rules were because there are ton's of people from Quebec working near where I live. I am a strong advocate of winter tires as well. The only reason I am holding off is we've spent a pile of money lately. If the Hankooks work through one winter I'll be happy. I don't do it again next winter though.

Hi Folks,

Not to rub it in, but today is 80°F (26.7), yesterday we were using the Air Conditioning... Reason we are here...NO BUGS, and warm winters!

After running dedicated snows on previous cars and first gen tacoma, i’ve elected to use duratracs year round 255/75R17 plus winter weight.

Going to give my Coopers a good test tomorrow... this time last night we had next to no snow, now we have 8-10” and it’s supposed to continue through the night!
