I've heard of the Next Gen Drivetrain, Inc. outfit over on some car websites as they tend to pop into the conversation regarding the GM transmission failures.
Then this video popped up from The Car Guy Online (warning: it's quite long, but loaded with lots of interesting discussion):
There are chapter markers in the video so you can actually jump to the Ford related section, if you so desire.
I know the engineer is going to make a pitch for his company that he founded, but it appears to be a reputable company and not some sham operation. From the Ford section, there were some interesting takeaways.
- the 10R80 has extra components that don't perform any functions, and these components have since been removed on the updated 10R140 transmission.
- the engineer suspects there are machining errors in components of the transmission that may be a result of the machining equipment not being able to reach designed depths (I'm not sure how he'd know this, but he's way smarter on the subject than me).
- the engineer asserts the quality of the aluminum used by Ford is absolute junk that will not hold up over time.
there's a lot more information in the video, but from the Ford section specifically those were just a few points that jumped out at me. especially the discussion on aluminum quality.
anyway, this led me to go to their company website and look into their write up about the Ford 10R80 transmission:
https://nextgendiesel.com/blogs/transmissions-101/ford-10r80-transmission-problems-solutions
i suspect that the actual website write-up will be a lot more meaningful to the tech folks on this forum. very interesting stuff. also very expensive stuff, tho cheaper than a brand new transmission.
anyway, thought i'd share as i didn't find any discussions on this company elsewhere on these forums via a search.
