I've heard of the Next Gen Drivetrain, Inc. outfit over on some car websites as they tend to pop into the conversation regarding the GM transmission failures.

Then this video popped up from The Car Guy Online (warning: it's quite long, but loaded with lots of interesting discussion):

There are chapter markers in the video so you can actually jump to the Ford related section, if you so desire.

I know the engineer is going to make a pitch for his company that he founded, but it appears to be a reputable company and not some sham operation. From the Ford section, there were some interesting takeaways.
- the 10R80 has extra components that don't perform any functions, and these components have since been removed on the updated 10R140 transmission.
- the engineer suspects there are machining errors in components of the transmission that may be a result of the machining equipment not being able to reach designed depths (I'm not sure how he'd know this, but he's way smarter on the subject than me).
- the engineer asserts the quality of the aluminum used by Ford is absolute junk that will not hold up over time.

there's a lot more information in the video, but from the Ford section specifically those were just a few points that jumped out at me. especially the discussion on aluminum quality.

anyway, this led me to go to their company website and look into their write up about the Ford 10R80 transmission:
https://nextgendiesel.com/blogs/transmissions-101/ford-10r80-transmission-problems-solutions

i suspect that the actual website write-up will be a lot more meaningful to the tech folks on this forum. very interesting stuff. also very expensive stuff, tho cheaper than a brand new transmission.

anyway, thought i'd share as i didn't find any discussions on this company elsewhere on these forums via a search.

They may make good stuff. But their reman is twice the price of a brand new unit from levitown Ford.
if, and this is a big if, next gen's claims on the reliability of their products are accurate (which they do back up with lifetime warranties) then then perhaps it's a buy once, cry once. but i think this only applies for people who keep their vehicles longer than usual. like, 8 or even 10 years +.

I wonder if anyone having problems with the 10R80 in the 5G can swap in a 10R60?
I have a 6G with the 10R60, and under normal driving conditions, I can't even feel the gear shifting.

If you’re going to swap transmissions then put the latest 10R80 updated one back in. Much easier and if in a 4x4 then also much cheaper. The updated 10R80 drives like a totally different truck.

I'm just 15 mins into the video & decided to google 'ranger5g nextgen' & here I am. I plan to keep the ranger forever. Now I need to go see their site. I only have 60k miles & I got my transmission flashed last yr. My issue was it felt like someone was hitting me as I was slowing down, subtle, now it's gone.
Anyway, good luck to us all.

My transmission appears to still be good. Sometimes I wonder if something I feel is the start of a problem, but I think its mainly in my head after reading all the threads about it.

If a class action comes along for US, then I'll def get onboard. I now have 11 months left on my 5 year drive train warranty.

I have the same transmission problem. I did use the ford warranty before it ended but it only lasted 2 months before the problem came back. I took it to another place an actually transmission shop and they felt the problem but no error code to justify with the issue. I am using car shield to help.
I talked to ford again about reflashing and they said no not covered only the parts were covered under that 1 year warranty. So i can either try pepboys and they can help convince car shield to giving me a new/rebuilt transmission or re-manufactured one "crossing fingers" . Pepboys will not fix it but only replace it.
At least i only need to pay the $100 diagnostics then wait for car shield to cover the rest.

2019-58K miles on it.

Maybe i can look into a new 2024/25 ranger this time 4x4.

yeah there’s no doubt the horror stories can be spooky and convince you there’s a problem. My transmission can be quirky. This Next Gen outfit is financially interested in me not trusting my transmission. No doubt about that. So I try to take all this as informative and set my expectations accordingly. I know my transmission isn’t what I’d like, but it works.

I just really was interested in the discussion on the design and manufacture of the transmission.

Well i am back from pepboys, the same thing i been reading its the "learning transmission"
Didn't i read somewhere that there is a tune that can fix that? for pepboys to fix it by reprogramming is $380 but then its back to the learning stages.

Personally, I wouldn't sign up for a class action. By doing so, you agree to whatever the lawyers and Ford agree to. So, if the agreement is to give everyone $50 or a free trans fluid flush and reprogram, that's all you get. You have no other recourse other than out of pocket for future repairs.
Like when Google was sued for $500bn for Incognito mode. The settlement was to delete the data, and no one got paid anything, other than lawyers.
