Hi All,

New to the forum! I am purchasing a certified 2021 Ranger XLT with 14,000 miles on it. Test drove it twice, didn’t see any issues with it. Car fax is clean - oil change at 5k, 8k, and 13k. Lease vehicle which was returned to the dealer. I have not picked it up yet, but I have come across certain issues with the transmission and turbo on the 2019-2021 models. Any recommendations besides keeping up with the normal maintenance? I know if you search a particular vehicle and their problems they are susceptible to, you will find issues with any car. But, I can’t help but question if this was a bad purchase. I would love some insight.
Thanks !

Nice truck! With it being a certified truck what warranty did that give you? As far as your two issues you pointed out ( transmission and turbo) the transmission is a known potential issue but the turbo is not. If under warranty then there’s remedy’s to fix the issues.

I will have the 7 yr / 100k powertrain warranty from date of in original in service. So from this point on I’ll have about 3 - 3/12 years left of the powertrain warranty. My only concern is a known issue with the transmission that could potentially happen after my warranty expires. I do roughly 15k miles a year, so figure by the time the warranty is set to expire, I would have around 60-70k miles on the truck. I wonder if there’s a remedy that could be addressed even if the transmission does not have any current issue..

The current remedy is TSB 25-2024 ( attached a copy of). If you have any shifting issues however slight then this TSB allows for a test to see if it has the CDF drum issue. If it does then the transmission is repaired/replaced under warranty. There’s no preventative measures for the CDF drum issue. You can search the forum to read endless accounts of transmission issue experiences.

I have a 2021 Lariat, purchased new. Although it is relativity low mileage at 30,000, I am retired and it is my daily driver. But, about half the mileage is towing our 7000 lb travel trailer, so there has been some "severe" use, and the trans has been flawless in operation.
I have not had any problems, at all, in the 4 years of ownership, and Truck still operates like it was new. Yeah, a bit obsessive with the maintaince as far as trans and fluids but worth it in the long run.
Lot of info here about how some of us go a bit overboard with maintaince, especially with the trans which seems to be the main area of concern.
Being yours is a low mileage, and you have the extended warranty, I would not worry....just enjoy your new Ranger.

Let me add a few items....
At 14,000 miles, your fluids should be ok, and your oil changes were recorded. But, your brake fluid is getting up there on "age" at 4 years old. And, your battery, at 4 years old is where many have started to have problems with it going bad.
Maybe see if the dealer could do a brake flush/bleed and give the battery a check, especially if it is the original.

Transmission would be my main concern. My 21 was fine until about 73k and went poof at 75k. New version of the transmission is amazingly smooth and well behaved. I would look into a 22.5 or later when all the changes happened to be safe. My wife got a 22 explorer recently and build date is all I cared about

Thank you all for the information! I’m going to hope for the best. Do you foresee any recalls coming that could fix the issue before it were to arise? If it were to happen, I’m hoping it’s something that would be addressed while it’s still under warranty.
I really love the truck and I got a great deal on it, so I really wanna make this one work and not look for a newer one (Especially since I’m picking it up tomorrow) ?

Will hope for the best!! I’m hoping the majority of ‘21 rangers out there don’t have any issues and therefore are not on this forum ?
