Transmission kind of "hugs" first gear when I first start. What should I do?

I don't know about others but, there are a lot of important details missing in this story.

If Ford covered any of it, I have to assume it was a Ford dealer that did the work. What tune did they send him home with? I can't see a Ford dealer sending him home with anything other than an FP tune. And what tune are you running?

I would assume it was the FP transmission tune. He sent me home with his card in case I ran into issues but I haven't a clue what I did with it... never thought I'd end up in a pickle with this truck

I believe the FP tunes retains skip shifting. Dont think it allows that as an option. Could be way wrong.

What is a "transmission tune"? All the tunes I have heard of are performance tunes that change multiple parameters besides the transmission.

Have you ever checked the fluid level - numerous reports of underfilled trannies from the factory - mine included which was low by about a qt. Very poor reflection on Ford's QC - which doesn't appear to be improving much.

Yes! And with that stupid little dip stick that requires welder's gloves to check, I am sure many trannies don't get checked properly and are under or overfilled. Fluid level should be the first thing to check with any symptoms, but with the factory dipstick, it is almost impossible to do properly.

How do you know it was QC, maybe some smartie bean counter worked out that statistically 99% of transmissions would survive warranty period, even if under filled by a quart. Mercon LV is ~$20.00 Aud a quart here, multiply that by Xmillion Rangers built,..........

As title says, when I first get in on a cold start, the transmission kind of doesn't want to go into second on the first shift. It sticks and then shifts.
I have a 91 Tune with the trans tune so it goes through every gear.
I was going to get a trans flush done, I am just shy of 60k miles. Would a trans flush possibly help or do I need to just start planning for the trans failure?

M mine does that too, since new. It’s normal on my 50,000 mile, 2919, a product of the shifting when cold.
If I keep pressing on accelerator, lightly, changes normally. If I lift, it’s like it’s having decision making problems shifting from 1-2nd.
so far, all is well.

I've got 2 thousand miles left on my power train warranty so I might as well let them look at it just in case. Hardest part is not having the tune on anymore

Yep, now that the weather is starting to warm again, symptoms are less frequent. Temps mid 60's today and ASS started working again. I had a fluid flush at 55k. Will probably do filter change around 75k or so. Playing it by ear.

The latest TSB has a test procedure now to detect CDF drum issues. It has provisions for temperature. So there should be no more dealer can’t duplicate scenarios. And the OP is still under warranty.

Thank god. I can’t tell you the nonsense I went through getting them to replace my transmission. Glad others won’t have to experience that. I don’t understand why either. They got paid nearly double what techs do in the luxury import world of warranty. The RO had all the times paid out on it.

So glad they’re taking care of you. I was fortunate to benefit from the TSB also and just want to make sure everyone with a warranty knows about it.

Just to clarify - did you use the most recent TSB version and did they have to confirm they had the equipment to test it.
