My wife drove an hour north to try some other towns beach out. We stopped and had a nice brunch before hotting the beach. No issues with the truck!

We left the beach, ended up on the turnpike, no issues. After about 45 minutes, I let off the gas as I approached a slower vehicle, and after changing lanes, reapplied throttle...

...and the transmission banged hard. Then it seemed to not know what gear it wanted to be iin.it was bucking a lot, but no idiot lights came on.

Shifting the truck to Sport seemed to clean it up a touch, but it was still bucking a little.

I pulled off the interstate 2 miles later at my exit, and needed gas, so I pulled over.

The truck smelled like burning chemicals. And there was some kind of smoking coming out from under the truck on the passenger side, according to my wife.

The rest of the drive home was uneventful! Although, I still had the burning smell when we got to our driveway.

Roughly 35,000 miles with a filter and fluid change 1.5 yrs ago. The KAM was also reset so the transmission could relearn.

Overheated/foamed fluid.

The trans is overfilled and ended up in a thermal runaway. If you look under the truck you're going to find vented fluid all over the underside.

When that happens, the fluid foams, foamy fluid is a horrible hydraulic fluid and you end up with bad shifts.

If you were monitoring temp at the time I would bet a quart of ULV that it was up over 250 degrees.

This mostly happens when you're at sustained highway speeds.

I don't know exactly what kicks off the cycle, but I've had it happen once and that was ages ago.

On the upside, if you're lucky it blew out enough fluid that it is at the proper level. :)

Seriously though, take it to someone else's car wash and clean off the underside, and then check the fluid. Get it to the low end of spec and you should be fine. Keep on with the fluid changes and monitor the level after the dealership changes it. They might think they are doing you a favor keeping it spot on the money or on the high end of the spec. The reality is, they're a pain in the ass to get right, so if you fudge it on the low end, you're less likely to end up with vented fluid.

Well...

...the truck is still under (extended) warranty and it was the dealership that did the work.

I'm going to pull the skid plate tomorrow and see if it's holding trans fluid, and go from there.

How do you monitor the trans temp on the Ranger? MY 2019 has the basic display package and I've never been able to find this. My Cherokee's vehicle had info this plus oil and coolant temp.

How do you navigate to it through the display?

As far as I know the only way to get the trans temp is to use an app like Torque and a bluetooth OBDII plug. I bought one so I could see what the trans temp was for checking the fluid level.

I use an OBD2 Dongle and Torque Pro.

Does it also provide engine oil and coolant temps?
No and sortof.

We don't have a coolant temp sensor apparently (although I've seen one in parts drawings), the 'coolant temp' is cylinder head temp.

I haven't had a lot of time to look into it, but you can monitor some form of engine temp.

No oil temp sensor though, but you can program an oil pressure PID.
