I still don't understand the BMS reset thing. What does it really do? And why should we have to pay to have it done, whether by tech or forscan or anyone else?
Saw a YT video this week that said this: New batteries take less amps to fully charge than older/old batteries. So the BMS needs to know when a new battery is installed to reset it's charging strategy to "new" mode... basing it's adjustments based on on runtime hours on said battery, else it still tries to change the new battery like the old one, which shortens the life of the new one because it is significantly over charged.

I don't buy that reasoning, a fully charged battery is a fully charged battery, irrespective of age, as a battery ages internal resistance increases and more voltage may be needed to achieve 100% soc. However Ford's bms from the factory only charges to 75% capacity, so as a number of folks on here have monitored charging characteristics they report seeing a upper level charging voltages that is within acceptable safety levels. So like some other features of the bms in theory they look great but are of little practical use. So as with BMW Ford ideally would like you to pay a dealer to reset the battery mgmt system but if you are interested in preserving the life of your battery either disco the bms or up the soc or use a battery charger to maintain a higher soc.
The point was the RATE of charging, not to what level, is what does the damage, thus as said, the amps from the alternator is managed based on "age" of battery. Of practical use??? If it makes you battery last longer (new battery go 5 or 6 years vs 2 do to overcharging (the high RATE, not level) you're better off. If there was not some overall benefit to a BMS, Ford (and every other manufacturer) would not bother with the effort or expense to make them. That said, they will also try and find a way to make a buck while doing it. Given that there seems to be (I have not needed to try it as yet) a user do-able procedure, without Forscan, to do the reset, they won't be making much from me.

Totally. I understand money needs to be made. at this point it’s a matter of principle.
Now I have to find a new dealership.
Imagine I had a real problem.

But the fact that I had to argue to get to the regular rip off rate is the kicker. They did drop it to 50$ programing after complaining. With free install if battery is purchased which again, Another argument.
It would be $190 diagnosis fee if I walked. So I was stuck.
If you don't mind driving to ROWE FORD in Westbrook Maine they have an excellent Service Dept. Over the years I've built up lots of respect with them as I don't bother them with non-sense like ' my seat is too cold on one LED but too hot two LED's ' you get my drift.

NO, I don't have any affiliation with them other than a customer

One of the worst experiences I’ve had at a dealership. Please let me know if I’m out of line.

Car went in for a simple battery replacement. After not being called back on day one. (Terrible service). I was told battery indeed needed replacing, which I knew. Was quoted a absurdly high cost. Told service advisor I had a dealership coupon which promoted battery at 174.95. They clarified saying that they START AT that cost and they couldn’t do anything for me. But said battery was still coming in at 100$ more than usual. A simple google search proves that it’s cheaper ANYWHERE else, but they have my car at this point. Plus another 100$ addtl for programming service. After arguing with a service manager over the phone. I find their dealership coupon I can use from their own website for 10% off service, cost now becomes the regular stealership price. ( still overpriced).

Now when coming to pick up car I ask when I can pick up car due to the holidays. ( i know people want to go home) After calling to confirm. I get 4 different answers from 4 different people 4 different times of closing. All they do is transfer me on the phone. NO COMMUNICATION, NO ACCOUNTABILITY.
What a clown college of a dealership.
At least I got my car back in one piece.

In summary- tried to rip me off for battery, argued and got real cost. Everyone shrugs and says It’s no one’s fault.

lesson learned.
Took my ā€˜21 XLT to Walmart. 4 year platinum, $169 installed, no programming fee.

Did they actually reset the BMS?
Or not charge you because they didn't do it?
