Should I be worried about the metal on my differential drain plug?

Don't most gear oils come with a friction modifier already in them?
Yep. Having it in there will not hurt our diff in any way. Sounds like another dealer tech spouting incorrect info.

The plot is thickening as this story continues ?
mmmm, mention of thickening reminds me of those commercials for chunky, the thickerer candy bar, I recall eating them back in the day, open wide for chunky:

Seriously though I don't think I'd last long in a service department with all the customers repeatedly asking "what went wrong " I wouldn't answer with " it's those damn friction modifiers again" but more apt to say "how the f*ck should I know, do I look like a walking failure analysis machine" .
All together now - Open wide for Chunky

Talked to the dealership again today. They sold it to me with a third party lifetime powertrain warranty. It's going to cost me the deductible of $100 to get it fixed. I thought it was going to be a fight, pleasantly surprised. Didn't get a better explanation of what's wrong with it. Going to get them to give me an itemized list of what was done when I pick it up. Should know the eta on repairs tomorrow.

Oh, they did reccomend that I put a new engine air and cabin air filter in. I did that a month ago. They're doing the transmission service and a full synthetic oil change while they're at it so I'll be out around $500, $400 of which is routine maintenance.

Glad you got it covered!

What's the other $400 for?

Transmission service and oil change. I was coming up on the reccomended mileage for trans and only about 900 miles before I needed an oil change. Asked them to do those while it's there.
The trans service is at 150k. Didn't you say you were at 65k? $400 for a synthetic oil change and a drain and fill on the trans is a decent price, and I'm glad to see they're recommending it be done earlier

As long as it's being done to keep the trans fluid clean, not get another $300 out of you ?

I asked them if they could do the trans service while they had it so I couldn't have to bring it back in a few weeks. The dealerships I've called around here have recommended anywhere from 65k to 80k miles. I'd rather do it earlier than recommended than later.

They tried to get some more money out of me with the engine and cabin air filters lol. Everything else I asked for.

Changed it today. 65k miles. It hasn't been making any noise or anything like that, just trying to be overly diligent about maintenance. I know shavings are common but I don't think these qualify as shavings. They're light gauge almost like it's some sort of baffle or something. Oil looked pretty good otherwise.

I figure if it ain't making any noise I'd just keep rolling but I'm a little worried.

Thanks in advance.

I think the lesson learned here by everyone is, 65k isn't being diligent enough.
A lot of people laughed at me for doing all the driveline fluids it at 20k, and yearly every since. (And I found a different but equivalent mess even at 20k)

yeah I'm going to be doing mine yearly now. It's too cheap and easy not to.

I changed my rear end oil at 50K miles with Kendall 80W90 that had Ford's spec listed on the label. There was some shavings on the drain plug at the time but nothing I got excited over. I just hit 75K so I dumped the oil and this was on the drain plug. It has a chamfer on it so I looked in the manual and figured out this is a piece of a ring gear backlash shim. The only abuse this truck has ever had was when the transmission went at 59K miles, it banged gears trying to shift. To say I'm pissed is an understatement.

You might want to pull that diff cover that is not normal.
