I have been dealing with a noise that sounds like a bearing failing. It’s groaning/ howling sound at low speeds and a high pitch whine at high speed. I brought it to my local dealer and they found nothing wrong, but it seems to be getting worse and is driving me nuts. I got underneath the truck and shook the drive shaft near the carrier bearing and the bearing would creak/ make metallic sound is this normal? Video of sound attached

No not normal at all.

Mine moves freely(not normal either) but does not slide in/out like that.

I'd get that in asap. Another dealer or an independent shop.

All driveshafts slide in and out of the transmission to account for suspension movement. Likewise there is play built into the driveshaft assembly for that movement. The question is whether the movement you show is within the bearing? Is there any kind of movement in the bearing and does it seem to have grinding/rough movement when you rotate it by hand with the truck in neutral?

Drive shaft does not spin freely when in neutral for some reason. There is a bit of play when I try to rotate it side to side.

There will be drag built into the system due load beating surfaces within the drivetrain and the fact that the drive-shaft is still transmitting power to the wheels. Is the play within the bearing as in the gap between the stationary metal outer surface and the rotating inner surface?

The bearings are cheap. Replace it and see if it makes things better

Can you raise a rear wheel and spin it?

If it’s the center shaft bearing then as weather warms up it gets noisier from what I’ve read here.

Make sense. First noticed it during a warm front by the time I got an appointment it had cooled off and the noise was almost entirely gone.

Hopefully you have enough warranty left for when it warms up. They will replace the whole drive shaft assembly not just the bearing.

i got my replacement bearing or two of them i think from one of the forum members and sponsors , @LevittownFordParts.com
gave me a good price and fast shipping. the rumor was that ford got a bad batch of bearings during the 5g production. The one i have on the truck currently has not had any problem.
