i was just thinking someone would be awful sad when they found the edge of the rainbow and got a ship full of iron instead of gold loll
I was driving home the other day, and the end of the rainbow touched down on the local pub! Just saying, leprechauns are Irish, so it kinda makes sense....
I tried for a pic, but it didn't come out :frown:

Like this? The most powerful boat on the great lake the Edwin Gott at 19000hp. She carries iron pellets on a regular bases. More worthless info. (I like this big machines)
------------------------------------
The ship is 1,004 feet (306 m) long and 105 feet (32 m) at the beam. It has a carrying capacity of 2,105,527 cubic feet (59,621.9 m3), has a 280-foot (85 m) unloading boom and is capable of unloading 11,200 NT/hr.[4] This is a maximum load of about 74,100 tons.[3] The ship has five cargo holds,[4] but 20 hatches which are 28 by 11 feet (8.5 by 3.4 m). The hatches are significantly smaller than other large lake freighters.[3]

We had the rare treat of a couple of freighter sightings a week or so ago, here on the Canadian side of Lake Huron. One was sailing south just off Kincardine, ON. I tried zooming in with my ipad camera but it was grainy.

I checked a marine vessel tracker site and found out it was Great Republic. At 194 metres (636 ft), it’s small compared to the Edwin Gott. Up close, she looks like this…

Before going to bed, I noticed a freighter all lit up out on the lake, heading north. I thought maybe she loaded up with salt in Goderich (world’s largest salt mine) and was headed north to Sault Ste. Marie. Nope, it was the Walter J. McCarthy Jr., another 1,000 footer from the same ship builder as the Edwin Gott.

Also a beast @9zero1790 !

Years ago we attended a music something concert held at Eagle River MI which is on the keweenaw peninsula. During the show some boat went past unbound which shipping lane is near the shore. Downbound is further out.

The HAPPY RIVER saltie comes to town bringing a lot joy and yellow. Duluth, MN which is the furthest inland harbor that cargo ships can get to on earth.
Nice! Salties regularly come to Toronto Harbour from South and Central America loaded with raw sugar. They are pretty rough looking. That’s a cool bit of trivia about Duluth. ?

Do you know what the sugar is used for? Here is the Algo Lake dumping road salt here.

The self discharging freighters are amazing!

The salties unload raw sugar at the Redpath sugar refinery on the Toronto waterfront. There, it’s refined into white sugar and other sugar products. Tanker trucks full of syrup and bottom dump trailers full of sugar can be seen coming and going as they haul the goods to large food processors.

The Phil Clarke coming under the lift bridge in Duluth MN. At 71, she is still one very reliable old boat. The star like white insignia is the front thruster location mark. Saltie boats are sometimes scrapped in 20 years. Fresh water is a good thing.

Awesome pictures guys and thanks for the Grate Lakes views and trivia! Living in the southeast, we don't get much of that so I've thoroughly enjoyed it. We live in a great country/continent.

Freshly baked pellets from United Taconite steam as they are loaded into the Arthur M. Anderson on a chilly Tuesday morning at CN Dock 6 In Duluth MN. The Anderson will deliver her cargo to Toledo. Yes, your steel comes from locations like this. My father-in-law retired from a taconite plant. October 24, 2023

A VERY good thing - here’s one of the salties that makes regular visits to Redpath Sugar in Toronto…

The other salties that come in look no better.
