With an engine cover really prevent water in the spark plugs?

I tried the pool noodle and the fancy rubber noodle from Lowe’s with the adhesive.

Both came off and were laying on top of the engine.

Make sure the foam goes over and behind the plastic clips on the bottom of the cowl. I haven't had any problem with the 1/2-inch pipe insulation I bought at Walmart. Try not to open the insulation anymore than you have to when applying it to the cowl

Not gonna do much to shield from water. Glad I got my (overpriced) jrc offroad cover which goes under the cowl ridge.

Personally I replaced that garbage foam strip they put between the cowl and plastic panels with 3m tape for extra protection.

I'm curious about the jrc offroad engine cover as well. I want to pull the trigger but wanted to get more info/opinions on it before I do. Have you had any issues with it?

Mine cracked near the front screw. Also use thread locker on the screws. I used semi perm. (Orange)

I've had a few minor issues.
Aligning the holes of the cover to the threaded holes of the brackets was a major pain in the butt, and as mentioned the screws need loctite(blue stuff should work) or they will loosen over time.

It's not worth the absurd $190 they charge but it beats getting water down the plug wells.


I installed a edge guard seal to dress it up, and act as a channel should water drain onto it.


The cover does indeed go past the cowl unlike the OEM unit.

Some clearance concerns, but I think it's ok.

Heat isn't much of an issue, the cover sits high above the engine and has plenty of ventilation.

Do you have a pic of your fix for this?

I will try and get one tomorrow. I just used black high temp RTV and squeezed out a dam around that one center clip (I cleaned the plastic on top with alcohol before applying the RTV). That center clip sits exactly over #4 cylinder and just a car wash will result in a puddle of water on top of the #4 coil pack (and down in that spark plug well). You don't have to divert it very far, before it falls harmlessly on either side.

Thanks. That edge guard you installed looks pretty good. Question, is the oil dipstick really accessible from thr top cut out? Can't really tell from the picture.

Cracked? As in the engine cover cracked? What in the world? How thin is the cover?

Nah it's kind of a pain in the ass, lol.

You can reach it in an awkward manner, but putting the dipstick back in is a challenge due to bad visibility. hard to find the hole(insert immature giggle here) once you pull the dipstick out (insert another immature giggle).

I uhh... use my finger to feel my way to--you know what I can't keep this mature. It's a pain but not impossible so there.

I don't think the cover will help based on it not being under the cowling where the water is coming in, the water will simply run down the head and fill the plug wells along the way, especially if your parked front end downhill, I also used silicone and pressure sensitive tape to seal up the cowling for a couple feet over the engine. Check under the hood after a good rain, you will see the gasket is wet between the two piece cowling, Good luck, it cost me a new head and an even bigger headache dealing with Ford.

Just installed the rare Ford Ranger engine cover hoping that it would prevent water from entering the spark plugs. But I see that the fourth spark plug is fully exposed. How would this cover even prevent water from gettin in?

Also surprised they chose to make the cover entirely out of soft foam instead of thin plastic. Any genius can see this is gonna insulate the engine making it warmer?

All of the design software they have , the years of trial and error , testing (i assume) and this was the cowl design they came up with ? Crappy fit where it seems together (directly over plugs with deep wells) , then angle it slightly downward and put a nice plastic rivet dead center for a precision drip point ... for the fix ? a sponge on top the engine , but not really in the right spot and not really all that absorbent ...

I really can’t understand how that much water gets in and especially into the rear plug. Today I pulled the engine cover on my ‘19 Lariat after all its life outside and daily driven, and inspected for water intrusion underneath and especially in the back. Things were lightly dirty sure but no evidence of any water, damage or heavy staining. I blew out any small leaf, sand etc. road debris from on top of the cam cover and around the plugs. Put the cover back on and did a solid hose test on the cowl and rear hood to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. The top of the engine cover and the riveted cowl lip under the hood seal, all was totally dry after I tested.

So I suppose as they say YMMV but I could not replicate water intrusion on mine.
