Can anyone confirm the Ford Performance black lug nuts #M-1012K-BR https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-1012K-BR will fit the OE Tremor wheels? The Ford site as well as Levittown generically say they fit but neither specifically addresses Tremor. Summit has the best price but their site says no fit.

Thanks for any help from personal experience.

I am quite certain these are two piece lugnuts and likely are subject to the swelling issues with the two piece lugnuts. I would go to aftermarket, being careful to get the correct 60° bearing area of which some aftermarket lugnuts do not have such.

Best,
Phil

Phil can you please elaborate? Are you saying the OE lug nuts are two piece and have and/or are causing some issue on the Ranger?

I have them on my Tremor and they fit.

I'm also aware of the swelling issue and will swap when I get new wheels/tires.

The factory silver lug nuts are a traditional style steel lug nut, open at both ends, with a polished acorn style cap for appearance. With multiple removal and installation cycles, the cap will stretch/wear and allow for rust/corrosion to get between the two surfaces, then the cap can split at the apexes of the hexagon and swell.

My Ranger nuts lasted about 2 years, and I replaced them all a few months ago with McGards. The same with my F150 lug nuts, I stretched them to 3 years, then replaced them.

Phil is saying the Ford black lug nuts are of similar 2 piece construction, just black caps instead of chrome, and will eventually do the same thing. I'm not disagreeing with him, I've never seen the Ford black lugs, so I have no idea, but trust his take.

McGard make a high quality, 1 piece, black acorn style replacement nut, with matching thread and seat (model 64015 IIRC). Gorilla and others also have similar replacements, but I can't speak to those.

When I had this discussion with a service advisor, he had never heard of problems with the stock lug nuts... and said they are made by McGard. ?‍♂

Guess I can understand the two piece conundrum.....thanks Jay. I'm typically not one to stray from Ford parts when they are available, but it seems these parts are not meant to be. McGard has been around a long time for sure. Gorilla as well, but I would trust the former first. For sure there are no eBay or Amazon third world lug nuts I'd trust the rolling stock to.

So unless someone else chimes in with negative McGard report or fitment, it appears I'll go for the 64015 Tough Nuts.

They may well be made by McGard, but they are definitely a 2 piece lug nut, and prone to separation issues. Here is an image of mine from the Ranger, and a google image of a post failure nut. I'm not saying all will, but both of my last 2 Ford trucks did, and it is a common problem with others as well.

Based on both this thread and the McGard application finder I just ordered the complete set of the 64015 (set is PN 84658) lug nuts.

Are people actually using them on the Tremor wheel rims? I ask b/c when I went to put them on today I noted that the cone face is only half the depth of the OEM lug nuts and when tightened down appear to show that some of the rim face the cone face should meet is still exposed.

It seems that with these McGard lug nuts I'm only getting half the "security" I get with the OEM ones.

Please educate me/help me out.

TIA

I replaced the ones on my ranger with some cheapies off amazon. I think they were under $30 for a set of 24. On my fusion I had to do the rear brakes at 48K an they didn't want to come off. Had to hammer them with a impact to get them off. Good thing I didn't get a flat on the side of the road. They don't last that long here because moister eventually seeps into them an the freezing cycles screw them up.

84658 are not the 64015 nuts. Look at the second image in this link it shows the straight side nuts in the 84658.

https://shop.mcgard.com/black-cone-...uts-4-wheel-locks-1-key-and-key-storage-pouch

64015 are bulge seat nuts, look at the 2nd image in this link.

https://shop.mcgard.com/black-bulge...t-set-m12-x-1-5-thread-size-set-of-4-lug-nuts

84538 shows bulge nuts, but it's hard to tell whether the lock nuts are as well. I bought 5 packs of the 64015 which are 4 lugs/pack.

I guess I made a $100 mistake. ?

Thanks for the info. Really appreciate it! Time to correct the error of my ways....

?

EDIT: I figured out what I did wrong now that it has been pointed out to me.... I was looking on the McGard webpage and basically got "bulge" hallucinations after looking at all the variations. When I got to the kit I thought I read "bulge" in the description. Alas, no.

Bugs me that McGard doesn't sell a bulge version of the locking lug nut. I think I remember (but again, I could be hallucinating) that McGard says a non-bulge locking lug nut still works? I'm not sure I like that idea. So, maybe Gorilla...?

EDIT #2: Nope, it wasn't hallucinating, it was "assuming." When I ordered the lug nut set for the Ranger I also ordered one for my BL Bronco Sport. THAT kit has bulge cone lug nuts. So I dropped what I thought was the Ranger equivalent into my basket and ordered it.
