Looks like 10 speed owners have yet another fun issue to deal with. Not sure if you had this issue over there. Our Rangers come from the Rayong Thailand assembly plant, but I think all the 10 speeds come from Livonia or Sharonville, so should be the same as yours. At least this is just a software fix.

Due to a software issue, under certain circumstances if the battery level drops below a critical threshold, the transmission may shift into Park when the vehicle is travelling at speeds below 6km/h. This may cause a sudden stop without the rear brake lamps illuminating as intended.
That's a spectacularly bad scenario.

It's scary how software could do something that evil without some kind of mechanical interlock.

That is a really small and weirdly specific number impacted for the number of things the 10spd shows up in. Especially over that many years.

Some specifc combination of options that isn't common?

Hi Cam,

The parking pawl should be able to take this sudden engagement and not break anything...it is the lack of brake lights that is of concern....

The pressure on engineers today to speed up the development process seems to rear its ugly head while the vehicles are in customers hands. Certainly a strange glitch that may have been caught with more thorough time consuming testing. JMO...

Best,
Phil

...some reference to AI turning on humanity... or Terminator(s) vs. the Tremor model (shall I call mine T1000 now??) or simply chalk it up to another component to depopulate the planet.

Being Australia where everything is trying to kill you I wonder if the mice aren't under the hood setting this up like a sinister Secret of NIMH reboot.

Just another reason to turn off BMS and set battery SOC to 90%, and add a Batteryminder Onboard Desulfator that desulfates the battery while you drive.

Keep the battery at optimal charge and sulfate to a minimum. And you battery should last you 9-10 years!

Hi Phil

Yes it was the parking pawl or its anchor point I was thinking of here. I don't know where the anchor point is on the 10R80, but I know of some boxes where it is simply a ridge cast into the transmission casing. Would be sad if you had to scrap the whole casing because that bit snapped out. Although the sudden stop probably wouldn't be good if someone was tailgating you, which of course nearly always happens in a car park.

Yes I agree with you on the pressure on engineers, my father was one, and he steadfastly refused to compromise design for price. It no doubt lost him some sales, but it also got him a lot of happy customers, referrals, and return business.
I also see this in my own field, equipment that 20 years ago was regarded as the "Rolls Royce" of laboratory analyzers, have sadly succumbed to the, do it faster, do it cheaper, and almost good enough mantra. Interestingly this downturn seem to occurr about the same time that the Engineers and research scientists at the top were replaced with accountants, and "sales" managers.

No mice under my bonnet - I have one of these. She doesn't do a bad number on the rats either. The snakes I generally try to leave alone, particularly the browns, those things can, and will kill you.

the “ it’s good enough “ in current warfighter designs is appalling
