Last Friday marked the two year anniversary of purchasing my 2021 Ranger. A Supercrew XLT 4x4 w/Tremor package. Just over 32,000 miles and only minor issues. I really like the truck.

Starting to think about long-term ownership and getting concerned about some of the transmission issues that are popping up. And I started to look into the other options, not much out there that fits my needs as well.

I do a lot of fishing, hunting, and camping throughout the Rocky Mountains. Frequently pulling a 5700# camping trailer. I also live in the middle of a pretty big city, have a decent commute to work, and the truck is my daily driver. It’s also just the Princess and I, and at least one hunting dog along for the ride.

A 2024 Ranger? Maybe if they offered a Tremor version, but generally want to avoid the first model year. Toyota Tacoma? Nope. Just not going there. Nissan Frontier? I loved the 2012 I had, but the new one doesn’t excite me. And it’s ugly. Colorado/Canyon? Meh. Brother-in-law had one for a while and he just wanted to talk about my Ranger. An F150 would make many things easier and more comfortable, but damn tough to park Downtown and maneuver the camper into it’s tight parking spot. An SUV? Just doesn’t cut it with the dogs and what I haul around regularly.

I am really trying to make a good case for buying a new truck, but can’t seem to justify it. Maybe my best option is to purchase an extended warranty and hope for the best?

Don't worry about the trans, it's only a small percentage of the millions out there that 'might' have a problem. Or do worry about it, and get the ESP. Second thought, get the ESP anyway, so you will be covered for most things that can go wrong.

I was in a similar boat, and for the time being I've opted to stick with the Ranger. None of the other mid-sized trucks really do it for me, despite me trying to convince myself that a diesel Gladiator is a good idea (really isn't, but damn i love me a diesel). My plan now is to just address the few things that Ford screwed up on, one piece driveshaft, rear leaf springs and potentially a tune, and once we refinance our house in a few years then we'll decide if a bigger truck is in order. I don't see myself getting another mid-sized, at least not at this stage of the game.

i purchased a 7 yr esp from flood for the raptor i traded in on my ranger. never used it, but didnt regret it for the peace of mind it provided. i will wait til the 3 year (wont get anywhere near 36k before that) factory is up and see if i still like the ranger as much as i do now, and decide then. will probably get one
