Forest Service Visitor Map App

I wasn't sure where to post this exactly, but the USFS has fixed their Visitor Map app for the Android. You can now download version 1.2.6, which will allow you to download offline maps for use when you don't have cell service.

They have road conditions, road types, rec areas, some camping areas, and their road network on the app. It's pretty handy, especially for free.

There was a hiccup with the glitchy prior app, but they have been able to fix that now.

They've had it awhile, but it lost the ability to do offline map downloads.



With this update, you can now do that. I don't know about apple version.

It works well for my part of the world, as most of my offroading is in the National Forests. I have been able to find some waterfalls and fishing spots with it.

questions about Onx. is it worth the price? does it work with fords sync system or andriod auto to show maps on the trucks display? is the onx setup turn by turn navigation gps or more of a map app and you do the gps route outside onx?

In my opinion, it is worth the price. I love that I can save maps for offline and I can also drop pins for my favorite camping spots or make notes on things to look out for the next time I hit a certain trail.

I use a small device that enables Apple Carplay and OnX is compatible with that. For turn by turn directions to the trailhead, it opens Apple Maps. Once on the trail it will follow your location along the trail so you know where you're at.

Another option is Avenza maps - it gives you digital versions of the District Forest Service maps - they are a bit more detailed than the visitor map, but you have to buy each one - I think they are like $6 each or something like that.

I haven't checked out the USFS map app yet.

Another option that I have used a lot is Maprika (aslo known as GPS for ski). You can upload any map from any source, even a hand drawn picture. It available to use offline and you can share your tracks with others.

I've used Avenza. Some of the ranger district MVUM PDFs are free. I've got the Colorado maps on my phone, all free.

Very true, but I don't think those are any more detailed that what you get with the visitor map(s). I think the only way to get more detail is to get the ranger district maps - but if you don't need the additional detail, those other options are really good.

The only reason I use them at times is because they are the most accurate (but still not entirely accurate) maps for some of the more obscure spur roads. Some of the other older maps don't show some roads that exist or show them in the wrong alignment. The flip side is some of the older maps show roads that are now decommissioned, which the Avenza maps usually don't show.
