It's a shame, one would think that by now they would have come up with a safe way to have larger capacity fuel tanks or dual tanks, the day EV's reach 1000 miles range will be game over.

I might have picked one of these up over the 5g if it was available in the states. 2.3 4x4 with a 5 speed would have been a sweet combo. Slow but reliable.

Yep...not for USA....not federalized and too expensive to revamp for crash etc.

Hi Lone,

Yep...Friend of ours just loves her's and will not let go of it....over 250,000 miles on it. She just turned 90 years old. Still drives it between Bremerton Washington to Green Valley....snow bird. Her husband drove a Ford Ranchero for years....would not turn loose of it either. He is now past away and also loved the Explorer Sportstrac.

Was that model year before the 3.0 & 4.0 was introduced? My 1999 had a 4.0.

i always preferred the 2.3. Not sure when the v6 motprs were introduced.

My first Ranger (a 2000) was a 3.0 and I felt like it was under powered. I can't imagine what a 2.3 (non turbo) would have been like. Maybe for a 2WD, but with 4WD I think it would have been pretty wimpy. The big reason I got my second Ranger was to get the 4.0, which I liked a LOT better.

And the 4.0 is really not very quick either! It also likes gas a little too much. But I still like my 2005 Ranger. It drives smooth as silk. And still occupies a place in my garage. IMO, the 2.3 is only good for a manual, but it has its place as well.

I always thought the 4.0 was pretty strong - but compared to the 5G it is a SLUG. The 2.3 turbo mated to the 10 speed constantly amazes me with what it can do.

I loved my 2005 Ranger - I'd probably still be driving it if it weren't for my knees not being able to do a clutch in stop and go driving. I can drive it for a bit, but when I get into stop and go, my knee really starts to hurt. It is one of the big reasons why I traded for my 2019 - so I could use my Ranger as my daily driver.

I agree. I still think there is more room for a Ropoline formed (think Yeti Gas Tank) tank that has a larger capacity - even if by 5 or 6 gallons that would make a 120 mile difference and only weigh about 50 pounds more of fuel.

IMHO - All cars and light trucks should carry a 400 mile tank - stock from the factory.
If your car gets 40MPG then you get a way with a minimum 10 gallon tank.
If you get 20MPG, you need a 20 gallon tank.
Getting 12MPG, you need a 34 gallon tank.

The 4.0 in my 1999 was OK but not too strong. A dual overhead cam was added to the later 4.0's which I had in the 2011 and it made a difference with a reasonable increase in power...both auto trans. But no comparison with the 2.3L EcoBoost.
